Grace Design Solutions started a lateral damp proofing project today.

Hydrostatic pressure from the soil behind a basement wall has created visible damp on the wall in a storeroom that has medical products, so damp is a major concern.

We removed the plaster to the raw bricks and applied the first coat of "Dampblok Basement" to the wall. An additional 3 coats will be required.

We will them apply new modified plaster to the "Dampblok Basement" that will prevent salt growth and will ensure the new plaster is waterproof.

Rhinolite and painting will follow.

Grace Design Solutions are busy with another damp proofing project in the upmarket residential suburb of Northcliff this week.

We removed all the damp contaminated plaster to expose the raw bricks. Injected a chemical damp proof into the lower walls which is followed by a dampblok slurry and plastering. We will add a salt retardant and waterproof additive into the new plaster.

Closed "hoekies" can be affected by condensation which may result in damp.

This small enclosed area in a home in gauteng creates significant condensation that water was noted on the floor tiles. The upper corner was damp to the touch. Mould formation was noted on one of the walls and the wooden door frames were rotten and had mould growth on the inside.

Ensure that all enclosures around the home has some airflow to keep the walls and roof dry.

Bitumen waterproofing that looks like this is no longer a barrier.

This torch fused waterproofing membrane was applied to a roof slab and never had any maintenance carried out over many years.

Now the solution is to uplift and replace with a new bitumen heat fused waterproofing membrane which is more expensive than carrying out 3 year routine maintenance to ensure the longevity of the bitumen membrane.

The connection joints on a downpipe can result in significant damp in a wall structure if the downpipe is not maintained.

We were asked to quote on repairing damp in a bedroom wall this week.

On closer inspection of the exterior we noted that all the downpipe connection joints were leaking on a double storey building.

Water is existing the downpipe through the joints and flooding the facebricks creating a damp interior wall.

Winter in Gauteng is the ideal time to carry out waterproofing maintenance ensuring your home is leak free for the next rainy season.

Waterproofing maintenance should be carried out every three years to ensure your waterproofing has not been degradated by the UV which may lead to leaks. Maintenance includes rejuvenation of acrylic and bitumen waterproofing surfaces with the addition of a coat of waterproofing.

Meanwhile an inspection should be carried out every dry season to identify any areas that could lead to water leaks. A routine inspection does not necessary include recoating.
