What’s Happening?
​The technical term for those sparks and flashes is Arcing. This occurs when the electrical current overcomes the resistance of the air and "jumps" between two points—like a miniature version of lightning.
​Potential Causes
​Loose Connections: This is the most common culprit. If the wires behind that outlet aren't screwed down tight, the electricity has to "jump" across the gap to complete the circuit, generating intense heat.
​Damaged Insulation: If the protective coating on the wires is cracked or melted (which can be seen in the video after the first few pops), the "hot" wire can leak current to the "neutral" or "ground" wire.
​Conductive Contamination: Dust, moisture, or even debris inside the wall can create a path for electricity to travel where it doesn't belong.
​Mechanical Stress: The person in the video is moving the outlet around. If a wire is partially broken or barely touching a terminal, that movement creates a "make-and-break" connection that triggers the arcs.
​Why This is Extremely Dangerous
​Extreme Heat: Electrical arcs can reach temperatures of thousands of degrees. This is more than enough to ignite the plastic housing, the drywall, or the wooden studs inside the wall.
​Electrocution Risk: The person holding that outlet is one slip away from a fatal shock. If the current finds a path through their body to the ground, it can cause cardiac arrest.
​Arc Flash Explosion: In some cases, an arc can cause the surrounding air to expand rapidly, essentially creating a small explosion that can spray molten metal.
