🔥🇿🇦 WEATHER HEADS-UP: A BIG WARM-UP IS SHOWING FOR WEDNESDAY! 🌡️ And Thursday 26th and 27th

South Africa, the weather rollercoaster is taking another turn! 🎢

After all the recent cold, forecast guidance is still showing a significant warm-up for Wednesday, 26 August, with much of the country potentially seeing very warm to hot conditions.

🌡️ From winter chill to a sudden burst of heat! ❄️➡️🔥

The interior is where things could really start heating up, with temperatures climbing sharply compared to the cold conditions we’ve recently experienced.

It’s still several days away, so the exact temperatures and areas affected can change — but this warm-up is definitely something I’ll be keeping a close eye on.

South Africa… one minute we’re reaching for the blankets, the next we’ll be reaching for the sunscreen! 😂☀️

🌎🔥 A POTENTIALLY HISTORIC EL NIÑO IS DEVELOPING

El Niño 2026 is rapidly strengthening — and the latest forecasts are pointing toward an event that could rank among the strongest ever observed.

NOAA currently gives a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during the coming months, while its latest outlook gives a 69% chance that the October–December event will exceed the strength of previous El Niño events recorded since 1950.

The ocean signal is already remarkable. Sea-surface temperatures in parts of the eastern equatorial Pacific are more than 2°C above average, while significant warmth is also present beneath the surface — with subsurface anomalies reaching around +10°C at depth.

The World Meteorological Organization is also forecasting a rapid intensification, with its latest multi-model forecast reaching approximately +2.9°C for August–October, with the strengthening expected to peak around November.

🔥 So what does this mean?

El Niño is one of Earth's most powerful natural climate drivers. A very strong event can dramatically shift rainfall and temperature patterns across different parts of the world.

The WMO is already forecasting above-normal temperatures across much of the globe, while rainfall patterns are expected to become increasingly uneven — with some regions facing enhanced rainfall and flooding risk, while others experience increased drought risk. A positive Indian Ocean Dipole is also expected to develop alongside El Niño.

🇿🇦 And for Southern Africa?

This is where things get particularly interesting.

El Niño does not simply mean “hot and dry everywhere.” Its influence interacts with other ocean and atmospheric patterns, meaning the eventual impact on South Africa can vary considerably from one season and region to another.

The developing El Niño will therefore be something we will be watching very closely as we move toward the 2026/27 summer season.

At this stage, it is too early to say that South Africa is guaranteed a particular outcome — but the strength and rapid development of this El Niño make it a major climate signal worth watching.

This could become one of the most important large-scale weather drivers of late 2026 and into 2027.

The Pacific is warming rapidly. The atmosphere is responding. And the next few months could be very interesting. 🌎🔥
