Spring storms on the Highveld arrive fast: a dry, dusty winter one week, hard rain and gale-force gusts the next. Koi ponds take the hit in two ways at once, and a bit of planning between storms makes a real difference.

Rain running off a deck, patio or garden bed carries soil, fertiliser, leaf litter and organic debris straight into the pond, muddying the water and feeding the very algae that wakes up as the water warms. Strong wind does its own damage, filling the surface with leaves and seeds that sink and break down where your fish live.

After a storm, resist the urge to do everything at once. Skim floating debris from the surface, check that baskets and mechanical filtration aren't already clogging, and look at how the water is clearing over the next day or two. If your pond has a dedicated bottom drain or settlement area, that's where much of the blown-in material ends up, and it needs attention as part of your routine, not just after bad weather.
