KAS Media Africa

KAS Media Africa KAS Media Africa promotes free and independent media as a crucial element of democracy.

Any democratic society needs a diverse media landscape and fair media laws to guarantee the monitoring role of journalism. Our activities focus on these factors as well as on developing effective political communication strategies with reporters and politicians from the region. Given how rapidly digitalization has been spreading all throughout Africa, one has unprecedented opportunities to reach a

n audience. We therefore help journalists and decision-makers develop the skills and methods to successfully get their message across.

We are shocked by reports of the abduction, torture, and attempted murder of Lesotho journalist and human rights activist Kananelo Boloetse.

We know Kananelo personally through our events and engagements in the region. Our thoughts are with him and his colleagues at Newsday Media. We wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Journalism is not a crime. Press freedom is not negotiable. Attacks on journalists are attacks on the public's right to information and freedom of expression.

We hope for a swift, independent, and transparent investigation into this crime and trust that those responsible will be held accountable.

As of 2 August, additional transparency requirements under the European Union’s AI Act will come into effect.

While this regulation applies in Europe, it raises important questions for newsrooms everywhere: How should journalists disclose the use of AI? Where is transparency necessary, and where is it not?

The good news: not every AI-assisted article needs to be labelled as AI-generated. At the same time, the new rules introduce specific transparency obligations for areas such as chatbots, highly realistic AI-generated images, and deepfakes.

For African media organisations, these developments offer valuable insights. Even where the AI Act does not apply, audiences increasingly expect transparency about how AI is used in journalism. Understanding emerging international standards can help newsrooms build trust and prepare for future regulatory debates.

To provide a quick overview, we have summarised the key provisions, exceptions, and practical implications in a simple infographic. It also highlights why technical watermarking alone is unlikely to solve the challenge of AI transparency.

The infographic was created with ChatGPT and subsequently reviewed, verified, and edited by me based on the text of the AI Act and the European Commission’s guidance.

We hope it will be a useful reference for journalists, editors, and media managers navigating the growing role of AI in journalism.
