Trees are often overlooked and don't receive the care or respect that they deserve. The reality is that without trees we would not be alive today and yet they are destroyed to make way for roads, buildings and to provide us with shelter. As homeowners we need to do whatever we can to protect and maintain our trees. They not only offer us respite from the heat and a habitat for the suburban wildlif

e but they add a cash value ( a foreign concept in South Africa) to our properties. Each tree we have growing in our gardens has a "cash value"

Sadly there are circumstances and situations where trees have to be removed and one has to be practical about these. Every now and then, my work takes me somewhere truly extraordinary, and this has been one of those moments. I’ve had the privilege of conducting a tree survey in a place so unique and breathtaking, it’s easily among the most phenomenal environments I’ve ever worked in.

What makes it even more meaningful is the trust behind the work. Being called upon to assess and care for trees, often in places like this, is something I never take for granted. It’s an honour to be trusted with that responsibility, and a privilege to contribute to the understanding and preservation of these landscapes.

Experiences like this remind me just how fortunate I am to do what I do.

Grateful for the journey, the trust, and the trees. 🌿

INTENTIONAL TREE POISONING?

These London plane trees on Jan Smuts Drive, corner Eastwood in Dunkeld appear to be the victims of intentional poisoning. I noticed this a few weeks ago and I now see that someone has placed signage on the trees. It is impossible that these trees were killed by the PSHB beetle (which seems to have drastically reduced in JHB) as the entire pavement is dead. After all the rains this is very unusual.

I am told that there is a proposed development of sorts to happen here. Has someone involved in this development done this to get rid of the trees and to assist with their planning of the entrance to this property ? The whole scene smacks of poisoning.

I have been waiting to see how Ai will enter the tree care industry and yesterday I met with Luna and Jun from Greener Lab. They have a fantastic product which we are going to help develop for the South African environment. Their program assists in identifying tree pests and diseases and how to treat them. It will also analyse soil compaction and composition. Looking forward to using this in everyday work soon.

Today we are working on a super indigenous garden on the slopes of JHB northern suburbs. Our work involves selectively pruning shrubs to maintain an organic shape and create more light into the garden below. We pride ourselves in our ability to recognise the needs of the homeowner who has a more "organic" and natural way as well as being able to work in very formal gardens needing a formal look. From large trees to smaller shrubs, we do it all.

With the need for solar panels on roofs, trees often become a victim of circumstance. It is not always necessary to remove trees to get more sun onto the panels. Here we have done a severe crown reduction to allow light onto the panels behind the trees. The trees will develop a canopy lower down and they will continue to benefit the environment and the homeowner keeps the trees. A win win.

We spent a few days in the bush again at a private lodge. Making trees safer is paramount when we change the usage of the area. Our focus is on assessing trees and pruning as needed to reduce risk of failure and to maintain tree health. Pruning trees gently to improve views and guest experience is also part of what we do. Nothing like sitting on a deck with a view of the beautiful Afican landscape and seeing the animals nearby.

Another trip to the bush to work on the trees surrounding a lodge. Tree maintenance is important even in the bush.
