This amazing photo was submitted by Mapoti Mgobozi, who operated this Pagani CPTu rig on a recent site. This image speaks so many words, most importantly, how our crews work in various weather conditions. You’ll notice the umbrella keeping the readout unit nice and dry in these wet conditions.

Thank you for your submission, Mapoti. This is a great picture! 📸

The success of a geotechnical project is often measured by the quality of the core retrieved and the precision of the day-to-day progress of the project, but the foundation of that success is built by the people leading the charge on the ground. This May, we are proud to announce Masi K**a as our Employee of the Month, a recognition that speaks not only to his personal dedication but also to the immense responsibility carried by our site supervisors.

There is a common misconception that a supervisor merely stands by to oversee operations. In reality, they are the “main line” of a project’s success and a primary pillar of client relations. A supervisor ensures the client remains informed and confident throughout the entire process, navigating the delicate balance between technical requirements and operational realities, and anything else required to keep the rigs working.

The role is multifaceted and demanding. Beyond managing active crews, supervisors handle the logistical complexities of international projects, including coordinating with social and community liaison teams, health and safety teams, helicopters, boats, vehicle transport of people and equipment, including drives to the nearest town for important supplies which can take an entire day. On particularly rigorous sites, administrative tasks are often squeezed into a mere two-hour window, as the majority of the day is spent on the ground. From ensuring the correct equipment is mobilised to managing staff meals and accommodation, the supervisor is the essential link between head office and the site.

Masi recently demonstrated this exceptional work ethic during a project where his meticulous attention to client needs resulted in outstanding core and sample recovery. This level of commitment is even more remarkable when considering the personal sacrifices involved; our supervisors and crews spend extended periods away from their families to ensure that projects meet their deadlines.

We take our hats off to Masi and all our site staff for their unwavering dedication to keeping our projects moving towards success. Thank you for always giving it your best!

Established in 2019, Geomechanics Uganda was born from the strategic requirement for a permanent, specialist presence in East Africa. The company’s formation was a direct result of the extensive work undertaken by Geomechanics on the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, spanning Tanzania and Uganda. The sheer scale and longevity of this landmark project provided the ideal catalyst for the Uganda branch to evolve into a standalone entity, capable of servicing regional infrastructure developments independently.

Operating as a specialist company in its own right, Geomechanics Uganda provides comprehensive services throughout Uganda and its neighbouring countries, ensuring the region has access to world-class technical expertise. To date, the branch has successfully completed a total of 18 projects, demonstrating a proven track record of delivery across a diverse range of environments.

Our expertise spans multiple sectors, including Road and Railway infrastructure, Electricity Transmission lines, and the Oil and Gas sector. The company leverages the additional fortitude and resources of its sister company, Geomechanics (Pty) Ltd., ensuring that every project—from local site assessments to complex cross-border energy developments—is supported by a wealth of continental experience. With a commitment to local excellence, Geomechanics Uganda delivers the precise and reliable data our clients need to enter the next phase of their projects with absolute confidence.

Geomech Africa was appointed to conduct an extensive in-situ testing campaign at a tailings storage facility. The scope of work consisted of six linear lined out positions around the TSF, with each line containing three test points requiring: Seismic CPTu testing with dissipation measurements; MOSTAP sampling; and electronic vane shear testing (eVST). The testing was executed using a 20-ton track-mounted rig with a 150kN Pagani mast mounted to the bed of the rig. The 20-ton rig was specifically chosen for this task as its mass alone provided the required reaction force without the need for anchoring, ensuring uninterrupted testing.

This aerial shot was taken by our Operations Director, Grant Rijsmus, of the support boat on the river, which is used daily to transfer crews and equipment to the drilling locations.

Extreme precautions are taken on remote sites like these, as these waters are home to many water-life creatures, including crocodiles. 🐊

Thank you for your submission, Grant! It allows us a better understanding of what our teams experience on a daily basis. 📸
