Slope stability has always been a critical engineering priority, but its importance has surged recently as operations tackle increasingly complex geotechnical environments. At the Slope Stability X26 conference (hosted by Open Business Group), Schalk Prinsloo, Operations Manager for Terra Monitoring, shared the stage with industry leaders from Anglo American, Exxaro Resources, Maccaferri Africa, Foskor, and Swakkop Uranium -to name a few - to address these modern challenges.

The event's agenda underscored a proactive industry shift toward pre-emptive solutions rather than reactive measures. Insightful sessions explored the integration of radar, satellite interferometry, drone technology, and advanced soil characterisation to bridge strategic design with ground reality. Across the board, the focus remained on the modern solutions and preventative steps that site operators and engineers should be prioritising.

During his address, "From Monitoring to Early Warning," Prinsloo emphasised that geotechnical instrumentation and telemetry play a vital role in the early detection of imminent threats. Slope failures are rarely caused by a single sudden event; they are the result of multiple factors acting over time and are preceded by measurable changes in ground behaviour. “The sooner you acquire reliable data, the more time you have to respond to both minor and major shifts.”

Prinsloo highlighted how Terra Monitoring’s suite of instrumentation and real-time data services provides these critical insights. By leveraging high-precision equipment and automated telemetry, operations can confidently transform raw geotechnical measurements into actionable safety decisions, effectively mitigating risks well before a failure occurs.

Geomechanics Uganda, operating under the leadership of Branch Managing Director Geoffrey Okello, has successfully concluded an international geotechnical drilling campaign at a tailings facility in Kenya. This marks the first time that Geomechanics has worked in Kenya.

The project initially required rotary core drilling at six targeted borehole locations to a depth of 20 metres each, with the primary objective of retrieving three undisturbed Shelby tube samples per borehole alongside disturbed samples.

This image is a prime example of the sites and conditions our teams get to work on. Most of the time, these sites are remote and warm.

Congratulations to our Marketing Manager, Deon! Deon has been with the group for over 6 years already and it has been a privilege to see him grow in his time here.

Each month the race is a close finish, and for September Deon was specifically chosen for going the extra mile, putting in a lot of time and effort with 3 successful marketing events scheduled this month and his dedication to ensure each event went off successfully.
