⚡ELECTRICITY NEWS & UPDATE | What is SAWEM and what does it mean for you?

South Africa is moving towards a more competitive electricity market through the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM), designed to allow more generators, traders and eligible buyers to participate in the wholesale electricity market. The proposed changes will introduce greater accountability for electricity generation and consumption, including potential financial consequences for market imbalances. For businesses, this makes energy planning, monitoring and efficient energy management increasingly important. While SAWEM will not immediately change how households buy electricity, wholesale market reforms could influence the way electricity is generated, priced and supplied over time.

The Department of Electricity and Energy published proposed rules for the wholesale electricity market, including financial penalties for technical mistakes.

Winter shouldn’t determine whether your business has power.

Johannesburg’s latest cold front is another reminder that energy resilience can no longer be treated as a “nice to have”.

With thousands of power outage calls being reported across the city, increased winter demand is putting further pressure on an already strained electricity network.

The conversation needs to move beyond simply asking, “When will the power come back?” We should be asking: “How prepared are we when it doesn’t?”

Solar, smart water heating and battery solutions can play an important role in reducing dependence on the grid, lowering peak electricity demand and keeping essential operations running when supply is disrupted.

South Africa’s energy future will not be built by one solution alone. It will require a combination of stronger infrastructure, smarter energy use and greater investment in decentralised energy solutions.

Following a meaningful Women’s Day weekend, we reflect on the inspiring moments shared at the Advanced Valves Women’s Breakfast on 7 August. It was a morning of connection, celebration, and a touch of pink fun, bringing women in the industry together. We were inspired by a powerful talk from Bianca, and uplifted by an energetic dance performance that lit up the room.

To all the women, thank you for the role you play every day. Your contribution continues to shape a stronger and more inclusive future.
