GASS Architecture Studios

GASS Architecture Studios GASS Architecture Studios is a bespoke architectural design studio with predominant focus on Urban regeneration, Architecture and Interior architecture.

We are passionate about our cities and the role we can play in the urban regeneration thereof. Our Mission: Creative design from inception to completion. Realising works that speak to individual needs. Crafting sustainability through objects and structures that are environmentally friendly. Architecture that compliments and enhances our diverse landscapes. Regeneration of our urban condition. Our Philosophy: Working closely with you towards a tailored, personalised solution. Sculpting spaces and places on a human scale. Enhancing the fabric of our inner cities by adding new layers of architecture to create sustainable environments that invigorate our urban streetscapes. Producing fine works of architecture that are rational and practical. Practicing the art and science of design from conception to delivery. Our Commitment: As part of our values, we incorporate sustainable environmental practices into all our designs. We explore every opportunity to practice “green” design, from the simplest detail to the highest technical application. We work towards realising an aesthetic that is as diverse as our country by using local materials, colour, and texture while still retaining a contemporary expression that augments the way we inhabit the modern world.

Rethinking urban residential design in the heart of Newlands, Pretoria. Menlyn Park Residential seamlessly combines adaptive reuse and new construction to deliver ~1,200 affordable housing units.

By transforming two underutilized office blocks alongside four contemporary new buildings, the scheme prioritizes “the space between”, weaving green walkways, braai pockets, and shared amenity lounges around preserved mature trees. With a clean material backdrop and vibrant color accents highlighting key circulation hubs, it’s a modern precinct designed for everyday connection, convenience, and community.

Heritage lives in the structures we inherit, but it’s carried forward by the people who care for them.

This month, reflecting on the historic projects we’ve worked on at GASS, we’re reminded that honoring heritage is a team effort. The varied backgrounds, traditions, and craft across our studio shape every decision we make as we build for the future.

From all of us at GASS Architecture Studios, we wish you a Happy Heritage Month🇿🇦

The Diamond | Jewel City

Once a secure, walled-off enclave for sorting precious metals and diamonds, The Diamond reclaims history for the public. Expanding on the urban regeneration scheme of the adjacent Maboneng Precinct and Arts on Main, this six-block revitalisation bridges Johannesburg’s industrial past with a dynamic mixed-use future.

The Sapphire | Jewel City

A true catalytic project for the Maboneng area, The Sapphire breathes visual energy into the heart of Joburg. By turning Fox Street into a tree-lined, pedestrian-oriented boulevard, local artists used the surrounding facades as canvases—creating a colorful backdrop for outdoor gathering spaces, independent shops, and street-level culture.

The Amber | Jewel City

Urban design meets human connection at The Amber. Centered around Fox Street, this block prioritises pedestrian life through seamless single-level sidewalks, integrated retail pockets, and warm wayfinding. With added greening, lighting, and seating, it turns a city transit route into an open, safe, and welcoming shared backyard.

The Ruby | Jewel City

The Ruby redefines what inner-city residential architecture can achieve. Built for vibrant urban living, this mixed-use hub weaves daily convenience directly into the community—combining ground-floor retail and a local school with an active rooftop 5-a-side soccer field overlooking the skyline.

Originally the 1950s “Bosman Building” by H.W.E. Stauch & Partners, Frank’s Place is a historic Johannesburg landmark revived by City Property and GASS Architecture Studios. The derelict structure was transformed into a 20-storey residential building featuring upgraded street-level retail, enclosed parking, a 980m² recreational podium, and lightweight Imison walling. This award-winning urban renewal project celebrates both the city’s heritage and its future.
