South Africa is in the middle of a real expansion of purpose-built psychiatric infrastructure right now, with several new acute units coming online across the country this year. This is a great opportunity to make dignity-centred design the standard from the outset.

A few design decisions are doing the real work:
→ Natural light and outdoor access. Courtyards, well-ventilated wards, and natural daylight aren't comfort features, they're two of the most consistently evidenced tools in therapeutic design, shown to measurably reduce patient distress and support recovery.
→ Separating care from operations. Splitting patient-facing spaces from maintenance and back-of-house operations isn't a logistics choice. It means clinical teams can deliver uninterrupted, dignified care without patients experiencing the chaos most hospitals run on behind the scenes.
→ Sensory-responsive spaces. Behavioural health design is moving hard toward sensory rooms and de-escalation environments: spaces built to regulate a patient's senses instead of relying on restraint. It's one of the fastest-growing demands from providers right now, and one of the clearest signals of where the field is headed.
→ Separating patient populations. Facilities that design distinct units for different age groups, acuities, or diagnoses see better outcomes on both sides. Patients get environments matched to their actual needs, and staff spend less time flexing between incompatible types of care in the same space.

Life Eugene Marais Ward Upgrade 🩺
Some of our favourite projects are the ones that quietly make a difference every day. We reimagined the space to support both patients and the clinical teams caring for them: more natural light, calmer material choices, and layouts designed around real moments of care.
Healthcare architecture at its best doesn't shout. It simply works, day after day, for the people who need it most.

Progress Update: Mogalakwena Private Hospital

A Contemporary Healing Atrium

Conceived as the heart of the hospital, the atrium seamlessly blends refined architecture with the warmth of hospitality. A soaring, light-filled volume, natural timber detailing, and carefully curated contemporary finishes create a calm, welcoming environment that reduces stress and promotes well-being.
Clear sightlines, intuitive wayfinding, and elegant spatial planning transforms circulation into an experience. Generous natural light and a restrained material palette foster a sense of openness, comfort, and reassurance.
More than a place of transition, the atrium becomes the architectural centrepiece of the hospital, where modern healthcare design meets timeless hospitality.

Before & after: reimagining the reception experience at Life Faerie Glen

First impressions shape how patients and families feel the moment they walk through the door. For this project, our goal was to transform the space into one that feels calm, welcoming, and functional, without compromising on the operational needs of a busy hospital.

Swipe to see the transformation. 🌟

Our flagship education project, Rivoni School for the Blind, reimagines what a school for the visually impaired can be.

It is a place where tactile pathways, acoustic cues, and material texture guide the movement of students. Every corridor, handrail, and surface transition was considered as a wayfinding tool.

Architecture here is felt, heard, and navigated with confidence. We are proud to design spaces that expand access and dignity for the communities who use them.

Expanding Critical Care Capacity: Life Flora ICU Ward Upgrade & Additions

One of the projects we're proud to look back on: an ICU ward upgrade for Life Flora that added 10 critical care beds. This expanded the facility's capacity to serve patients in need. We are honoured by the lasting impact this space continues to have on patient care.

New Glass Facade & Bridge Upgrade: Before & After

This upgrade showcases how dramatically a facade uplift can shift the visual narrative of an already iconic building. The modern glass facade contrasts with the wooden joinery added to the bridge in a harmonious and symbiotic manner, with improved accessibility to the hospital and consulting blocks. The new strip lights underneath the bridge make this hospital highly visible at night, creating a strong road presence in the heart of Pretoria East.

Concept Design - Military Hospital

The main objective of this 600-bed hospital project is to enable serving officers and their families to access efficient, quality, accessible and affordable healthcare.

The design process orientated around 3 core pillars:
🩺 Responsive: responds to the natural environment, local climate and green design.
🩺 Healing: the promotion of mental and physical health, maximum use of natural light and ventilation, welcoming public spaces, soft edges and spaces.
🩺 Functionality: efficient accessibility, simple wayfinding and orientation, allowance for future expansion, and separate circulation for staff, patients, public and services.
