Ubuntu. More than a word. A way of life.

“Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu.”
A person is a person through other people.

Mandela Day reminds us that the greatest impact we can have isn’t always through grand gestures. Often, it’s found in the small acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion we show one another every day.

Ubuntu is about recognising that our lives are connected. When we help someone else succeed, we all move forward. When we lift others up, our communities become stronger.

As engineers, we spend our days building roads, structures, and infrastructure. But the most important thing we can help build is a society where people care for one another.

Nelson Mandela showed us that true leadership is rooted in humility, forgiveness, and service. His legacy challenges each of us to ask a simple question:

Whose life can I make a little better today?

Whether it’s giving your time, sharing your knowledge, mentoring a young person, or simply lending a helping hand, every act of kindness matters.

This Mandela Day, let’s remember that building a better South Africa starts with how we treat the people around us.

Because Ubuntu isn’t just something we talk about.

It’s something we live.

This week, Civilab team had the privilege of presenting in the University of Cape Town’s Geosynthetics Course, joining students and industry professionals.

Civilab presented on Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) testing and the importance of quality control testing.

For Civilab, participation in initiatives like these goes beyond technical development. It forms part of our broader commitment to building engineering capacity across Africa.

As infrastructure, mining and environmental projects become increasingly complex, Africa needs greater access to world-class technical expertise, specialised laboratory capabilities and practical knowledge. Developing these skills locally in Africa, strengthens our profession, improves project outcomes and reduces reliance on expertise from outside the continent.

Civilab is proud to contribute to this journey. As the first commercial laboratory in Africa to undertake specialised GCL performance testing.

Thank you to the University of Cape Town and Prof. Denis Kalumba and all the presenters for delivering an outstanding programme and creating an environment where knowledge can be shared for the benefit of the entire engineering community.

Our Managing Director, Paimaan Byron, Pr Eng, has been recognised as a Fellow of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE).

This recognition appears in the June 2026 edition of Civil Engineering, SAICE’s official magazine, under “SAICE celebrates new Fellows”.

Fellowship of SAICE is a significant professional distinction and reflects sustained contribution, leadership, technical competence, and service to the civil engineering profession.

For Civilab, this is a proud moment. Paimaan’s recognition reflects the professional values we continue to stand for as a business: integrity, technical excellence, mentorship, and meaningful contribution to South Africa’s built environment.

Congratulations to Paimaan on this well-deserved achievement.

Today we honour the courage and sacrifice of the youth of 16 June 1976 — a generation that helped shape South Africa’s future.

At Civilab, we believe education is power. Strong foundations in Mathematics, Science, Technology and Engineering create the innovators, engineers, scientists and leaders who will build tomorrow’s South Africa.

By investing in young minds today, we help create opportunities, drive innovation, and strengthen our nation for generations to come.

Happy Youth Day, South Africa.
