Spring Day is one week away 🌱

On 1 September plenty of South Africans will be out with the hosepipe, splashing water on anyone who'll stand still for it - an old tradition for washing out winter and welcoming the new season.

Whatever your household's ritual is, this is also exactly the week to get ahead in the garden before everyone else has the same idea: clear the last of the winter dieback, feed your beds, get bulbs and seedlings in.

Whiplash weather, Joburg style ☀️

A few days after parts of the city saw snow, today turned into one of those unexpectedly warm 'winter' days that make you want to spend the whole afternoon outside.

It's exactly this kind of swing — hard frost one week, warm sun the next — that makes late winter the trickiest stretch for a Highveld garden. Frost-tender plants that survived the cold snap can still be caught out by a false start if they push new growth too early.

Fun Fact Friday 🌿

Leucospermum (Pincushion Protea) doesn't just rely on sunbirds and sugarbirds for pollination — its seeds have a fatty little attachment called an elaiosome that local ants can't resist.

The ants drag the seeds underground to eat the fatty bit, and in doing so bury the seed exactly where it's protected from fire and seed-eating rodents. The whole plant's survival strategy runs on an ant bribe.

Johannesburg woke up to one of its coldest mornings in years today ❄️

Temperatures dropped as low as 1°C overnight, with snow reported in parts of southern and eastern Gauteng and strong winds making it feel even colder.

If you didn't cover your frost-tender plants last night, check on them today before the sun gets to them — thawing slowly out of direct sun does far less damage than a quick blast of heat.

Hold off on watering too; frozen or waterlogged soil on top of this cold does more harm than good.

Fun Fact Friday 🌿

Clivia miniata (Bush Lily) is one of the best plants for a shady Joburg garden right now — glossy strap leaves all year and clusters of orange trumpet flowers just as most of the garden is still waking up from winter.

Lesser-known: it's named after Lady Charlotte Clive, Duchess of Northumberland, who first grew it from seed in England in the 1850s — the plant has never been common in the wild outside a small strip of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape forest.

Myth: you should wait until spring officially starts before doing any garden prep.

Truth: late August is prime time to get ahead — most Highveld gardens still have four to six weeks before real spring growth kicks in, and prepping beds, feeding soil and clearing winter dieback now means your garden hits the ground running instead of playing catch-up in October.

Fun Fact Friday 🌿

The Tree Fuchsia (Halleria lucida) is one of the best-kept secrets for Highveld winter gardens. It flowers when almost nothing else does, and its tubular red blooms are a magnet for sunbirds looking for a meal when food is scarce. Plant one near a window and you've basically installed a free bird-watching station.
