Days like today make it feel like full-blown spring — warming up, skies clearing, everything greening 🌱

But hold off on the frost-tender seedlings a little longer: on the Highveld, a late frost can still catch you out right through to mid-or-late September, even once the days feel properly warm.

Safer bet this week: clear the last of the winter debris, feed the lawn, dig compost into your beds and save the tomatoes and other frost-shy seedlings for another week or two 🍅

Gazania (Treasure Flower / Botterblom) does something most people never clock: its petals only open in strong sunlight and shut completely by evening, or even on an overcast day.

It's basically a built-in weather gauge for the garden bed; if the gazanias are closed at 11am, don't bother reaching for the sunscreen.

Happy Spring Day! 🌼 If you've lived on the Highveld a while, you know today's the unofficial line in the sand - hosepipes come out, half of Joburg ends up drenched by lunchtime, and everyone acts like winter's officially cancelled (even though there's usually one more cold snap hiding somewhere in September). It's also as good an excuse as any to actually get moving in the garden instead of just talking about it.

A few honest signs it's time: your lawn's gone from brown to that first flush of green, buds are swelling on anything that dropped its leaves back in June, and the soil under mulch already feels warmer than it has in months. If you haven't started yet, this week is the moment, clear out the last of the winter dieback, feed your beds, and get any spring bulbs or seedlings in while the ground's still easy to work, before everyone else has the same idea and the nurseries are picked clean.

Kniphofia (Red Hot Poker / Vuurpyl) isn't just a showy spike: its narrow, tubular flowers are built like a lock only a sunbird has the key for.

At 30–40mm deep, most insects can't reach the nectar at all, so the plant filters out casual visitors and saves the reward for long-billed sunbirds who'll actually carry pollen between plants.

Whiplash weather, Joburg style ☀️

A few days after parts of the city saw snow, today turned into one of those unexpectedly warm 'winter' days that make you want to spend the whole afternoon outside.

It's exactly this kind of swing — hard frost one week, warm sun the next — that makes late winter the trickiest stretch for a Highveld garden. Frost-tender plants that survived the cold snap can still be caught out by a false start if they push new growth too early.

Fun Fact Friday 🌿

Leucospermum (Pincushion Protea) doesn't just rely on sunbirds and sugarbirds for pollination — its seeds have a fatty little attachment called an elaiosome that local ants can't resist.

The ants drag the seeds underground to eat the fatty bit, and in doing so bury the seed exactly where it's protected from fire and seed-eating rodents. The whole plant's survival strategy runs on an ant bribe.

Johannesburg woke up to one of its coldest mornings in years today ❄️

Temperatures dropped as low as 1°C overnight, with snow reported in parts of southern and eastern Gauteng and strong winds making it feel even colder.

If you didn't cover your frost-tender plants last night, check on them today before the sun gets to them — thawing slowly out of direct sun does far less damage than a quick blast of heat.

Hold off on watering too; frozen or waterlogged soil on top of this cold does more harm than good.

Fun Fact Friday 🌿

Clivia miniata (Bush Lily) is one of the best plants for a shady Joburg garden right now — glossy strap leaves all year and clusters of orange trumpet flowers just as most of the garden is still waking up from winter.

Lesser-known: it's named after Lady Charlotte Clive, Duchess of Northumberland, who first grew it from seed in England in the 1850s — the plant has never been common in the wild outside a small strip of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape forest.
