One of the smartest things you can do is keep around 15% of your budget aside for the unexpected.

Once walls, floors and ceilings are opened up, you can sometimes discover problems that couldn't have been seen during the initial planning.

It could be old plumbing, damaged flooring underneath tiles, or a hidden structural issue.

These surprises are simply one of the realities of renovating an existing home.

If your renovation budget is R1 million, for example, consider keeping around R150,000 available as a contingency.

You may never need it. But if something unexpected is uncovered, having that funds available can prevent a surprise from becoming a major setback.
