A renovation can be exciting for you, but it can be confusing and stressful for your pets.

There are new people around, strange noises, deliveries coming and going, and parts of the house that suddenly look very different.

A few simple precautions can make things easier:

• Watch the gates. Construction teams and deliveries mean gates and doors may be open more often than usual. Make sure your pets can't escape.

• Plan for deliveries. Keep pets away from areas where materials are being delivered or moved.

• Think about loud machinery. Drills, grinders and other equipment can be frightening, particularly for dogs. Give them a quiet space away from the work where possible.

• Keep anxious dogs comfortable. If your dog is particularly nervous, consider having them stay with family, a friend or at a familiar boarding facility during the noisiest stages.

Your pets don't need to be part of the renovation team. A little planning can help keep them safe, calm and out of harm's way while your home is being transformed.

Your home’s outdoor space can be an oasis of privacy and relaxation. With just a few simple touches, you can create a back garden or patio area that’s both private and inviting:

• Add Greenery for Privacy: Tall shrubs, trees, or bamboo can be a natural barrier from neighbours while adding lush beauty to your garden.

• Create Defined Zones: Adding different areas, like a seating area or small deck, can create a more inviting, usable space.

• Incorporate Lighting: String lights or solar lanterns can create a warm ambiance in the evenings, making your garden perfect for holiday gatherings.

• Consider a Pergola or Privacy Screen: These are great additions for shade and seclusion, allowing you to enjoy your space fully.

There is value in creating spaces that feel like home. As a construction company specialising in home renovations, we’re here to help make your outdoor space exactly what you envision.

When planning a new home, few questions feel as practical as: “What is the building cost per square meter?”

It’s a fair question. After all, a square-meter rate seems to offer a quick, tidy answer. Take the desired size of the house, multiply it by a rate, and hey presto, you’ve got a building budget.

If only homes were quite so simple!

In reality, the price-per-square-meter rule is less of a rule and more of a rough starting point. It can be useful in the early stages of a construction conversation, but it should never be mistaken for an accurate quote, especially when building a bespoke or luxury home.

We discuss this further in this article: https://jukka.co.za/building-cost-per-square-meter-south-africa/

Renovating your home is exciting, but there is one frustration that’s almost impossible to avoid: DUST.

It can settle inside cupboards and wardrobes, travel through rooms and, if you have air conditioning, circulate further through the house.

A professional construction company will take the necessary precautions to reduce the amount of dust that can potentially escape the work area. Screening off spaces, protecting surfaces and keeping the site clean all make a difference.

But it’s important to be realistic. Dust will not be eliminated completely during a renovation.

A few things you can do to make life easier:

• Keep valuables, ornaments and non-essential items packed away

• Cover furniture and belongings in areas near the work

• Keep cupboards and wardrobes closed

• If possible, create a clean area in your home where you can escape the construction

• Where possible, give your living areas a vacuum and a wipe down every day to avoid dust building up throughout the project

• Speak to your construction company about how they will contain dust before work starts

Renovating doesn't have to mean living in a cloud of dust. Good site management can make a significant difference.

It’s simply one of those things worth knowing about before you start, so you can prepare properly and enjoy the transformation.

“You truly deserve to enjoy living in your house. It should be a place you can de-stress, a place that reflects your unique style, and a place that helps (not hinders) you in having the life you crave” – Chrissy Halton

If your renovation involves structural changes like removing walls, adding rooms, or altering the roofline, an engineer should be involved.

Contractors are not qualified to make structural decisions. While their experience may help guide the process, only a registered engineer can assess load-bearing elements, design safe alternatives, and sign off on the work.

Engineers carry professional indemnity insurance. This means if there’s ever a structural failure, you have legal recourse. Without this, the risk falls entirely on you.

Trying to save money by skipping this step can lead to serious issues down the line, including unsafe conditions, liability problems, and costly rework.

At Jukka Construction, we work closely with engineers on all projects that require structural input. It's the safest and most responsible way to build, and we wouldn’t do it any other way.

Happy National Women’s Day!

In our diverse nation, we celebrate the contributions of women who enrich our society in countless ways. Too often, their efforts go unrecognised, but today, we make it a point to honour and appreciate the amazing women in our lives.

When planning a renovation, most homeowners think about finishes, timelines, and budgets. Few think about security.

Depending on the scope of the work, there may be times when your home isn't as secure as it normally is. For example:

• External doors may be removed or replaced.
• Windows could be taken out while new ones are installed.
• Sections of the roof may be opened during structural work.
• Your alarm system may need to be disconnected temporarily.

These situations don't necessarily create a problem, but they do require planning.

Before your renovation starts, have a conversation with your construction company about how your property will be secured during the project, particularly overnight. Knowing what to expect allows you to make arrangements before they become urgent.

Planning ahead is one of the simplest ways to make your renovation smoother and less stressful.

If you're planning a renovation, we've put together a comprehensive homeowner's checklist covering security, budgeting, timelines, planning, and much more.
