Level 1 Water Restrictions Are Back

Water restrictions are back in Joburg — Level 1, from 1 September until the end of March. No watering the garden or filling the pool between 06:00 and 18:00, and no hosing down the driveway.
While you're adjusting, check for leaks. A dripping tap, a running toilet or a damp patch in the lawn adds up fast on a summer bill, and it's usually a quick fix.

When the industry actually shows up for someone 💙

An elderly tenant in Farramere Gardens had called out a plumber four times for a blocked, overflowing drain, no fix, no money left to try again, and a landlord who wouldn't take responsibility. She reached out to the Institute of Plumbing SA as a last resort.

IOPSA's Gauteng committee rallied a solution within days: Splashworks donated the materials, and Amile Projects sent a plumber to do the job pro bono. The drain's cleared, and the actual cause, (a defective municipal sewer) is now with the local municipality to sort out.

No fanfare, no invoice. Just people in our trade doing right by someone who'd run out of options.

When "free water" isn't actually free 💧

Johannesburg Water put out a statement today pushing back on claims that a community groundwater project in Region G had been abandoned. It hadn't — the boreholes are drilled, but the site sits on wetland ground, so a full environmental assessment has to clear before any borehole can legally be connected and used. In the meantime, Johannesburg Water says unauthorised parties entered the site and interfered with a borehole without permission, testing, or approval.

It's an extreme version of a mistake we see on a smaller scale all the time: people connecting to unlicensed water sources, or getting "quick fix" backup water put in by someone who isn't qualified to sign off on it. Untested water isn't automatically safe water, and unauthorised connections to municipal infrastructure carry real legal risk, not just a safety one.

Two warnings in one month: is your plumbing listening? 🔧

Johannesburg's had a rough few weeks: the Fordsburg substation fire that cut water to large parts of the city, and a Randpark Ridge pipe burst that took days longer to fix than it should have. Neither is a one-off, the city is currently losing an estimated 655 million litres of water a day to burst pipes, on a network with sections up to 80 years old.

Spring makes this worse before it gets better. As the ground dries out, Johannesburg's clay-heavy soil contracts, part of why burst reports climb through August and September, right as demand for irrigation, pools and hot water starts climbing too.

Reservoirs are running on empty right now 💧

An underground cable fire at the Fordsburg substation on Sunday night knocked out power to Rand Water's Eikenhof pump station, and the network is still catching up. As of the latest update, several of Joburg's reservoirs are sitting in single digits - Waterval Tower and Eagles Nest Reservoir 2 both at 1%, Crosby Reservoir and Brixton Tower at 2%. Areas fed by Aeroton, the Commando system (Eagles Nest, Naturena, Lenasia), Hursthill and Linden are affected today.

When supply like this comes back online, it doesn't come back gently. Pressure surges as the network refills are one of the most common causes of split pipes, blown geyser connections and sudden leaks - often in fittings that were already borderline.

If your taps have been dry or running low over the last day or two, it's worth checking your geyser and visible pipework once supply is back to full strength, before a slow drip turns into a bigger job.

Johannesburg loses an estimated 44.7% of the water it treats and pumps before it ever reaches a tap — leaked, burst, or otherwise unaccounted for. That works out to close to R3.8 billion in lost revenue a year, on a network Johannesburg Water itself says is largely more than 50 years old.

Most of that loss doesn't happen on the street where everyone can see it. It happens quietly, underground, on private property, behind walls — exactly the kind of leak that only shows up on your bill.

A leak on Pretoria Avenue in Ferndale has been running down the road for months. Johannesburg Water confirmed this week it's aware of it - the same stretch of steel pipe they repaired in 2025 after a leak took the area's water supply out for three days. A year on, a new leak has opened in the same spot.

The cause, according to JW: ageing infrastructure and ground vibration wearing through the pipe's corrosion coating. The fix needs a full pipeline replacement, which is waiting on capex funding with no timeline given.

It's not an isolated case. Johannesburg Water's own quarterly figures put the city at 4,336 pipe bursts a month, up from 2,960 the year before - that's roughly 144 bursts a day, or about one for every ward, every day. Their response-time target is 90%; the actual figure is 43.7%.

None of that is a reason to panic about municipal supply. It is a reason to stop assuming a previous repair on your property's connection is the end of the story, especially if the original fix only patched the visible section rather than replacing what's actually failing.
