Tanya's Pink Pod Bush Beans - Almost everyone has grown the green, yellow, and purple snap bean combinations, but here's a
pink podded bean to add to that list! Tanya's Pink Pod has a very unique murky pink colored pod and the more sunlight the plants receive, the brighter the
pink becomes. A shorter flat podded variety that is a great variety for longer cooking dishes. They can withstand above-average cooking
times, keep their integrity and wont go as mushy as other fresh bean varieties. Great for stews and potjiekos types of dishes. This bean was bred out of a purple romano type bean ( Sequoia ) and was found by Tanya, an apprentice at the Salt Spring Seed Company. She accidentally stumbled on the random plant and from there the variety was stabilized and is making its way to gardens all over the world with great excitement. Pods will turn green when cooked. A great producer of beautiful pink pods with good substance and flavour.

🌱 Thinking about starting a seed library?

A seed library can have only one or two types of seeds to start. You don't need hundreds of seed varieties, a dedicated building, or years of experience to get started.

Every seed library begins with the same question:

Why do you want to create one?

Maybe you want to preserve locally adapted varieties, strengthen food security, protect biodiversity, or simply make gardening more accessible in your community. Your purpose will shape everything that follows.

From there, think about the people you're hoping to serve. Will your seed library support beginner gardeners, schools, community gardens, experienced seed savers, or a mix of everyone? Choosing an accessible location and keeping the process simple will encourage more people to participate.

The most successful seed libraries don't try to do everything at once. They start small, grow steadily, and evolve alongside their community.

What begins as a handful of seed packets can one day become workshops, seed swaps, educational events, and a thriving network of local seed savers.

Every community is different, and every seed library will be too.

🌱 The important thing isn't having it all figured out—the first step is simply to start!

Seedy Sundays 🫘

Welcome to the the first of our Seed Saving Sundays Series 🌱

Every week we will post information on how to correctly save each type of seed. This week we will focus on beans, one our favourite summer crops.

Some growing tips for beans:

🌱 Growing Tip: Beans

Wait until frost risk has passed (Aug-Sept coastal, Oct-Nov inland) before sowing. Plant 2.5cm deep, full sun, 6-8 hrs/day. Water deeply and consistently - especially once flowers appear. Skip nitrogen-heavy fertilizer; beans make their own with a little help.

💡 Pro tip: New bean bed? Dust your seeds with a rhizobium inoculant before planting — it boosts nitrogen fixation for stronger, healthier plants.

Over the next few months we will be giving away 500 packs of seeds across the Garden Route!

How it works:

You receive seeds from us and grow them at home, on the condition that you commit to growing them out to the best of your ability and try to returning the same amount - or more - of that variety at the end of the season.

Harvest some for food, and let the rest of the plant go to seed. Once the seeds are dry and nearly ready to fall, bring them inside to finish drying completely. Then label them and return the same amount or more to us than you originally received.

You'll still have plenty left over to replant next season, and to share with friends.

This commitment is what keeps our seed bank growing, ensuring there are more seeds available to plant, season after season.

We will be at the Garden Market in Sedgefield on Sunday 03 October, come and collect yours there alternatively:

Send us a message or email us at [email protected] for more information.
