The design concept for the Durban High Court is rooted in movement. πŸŒ€

Not just the literal movement of people through the building β€” judges, the public, legal practitioners, detainees, administrative staff, each on their own secure and separated path β€” but metaphorical movement.

Like the ocean that defines Durban's context, the building receives an in-flow of disorder, dispute and injustice β€” and channels it toward clarity, resolution and justice. The architecture becomes a metaphor for the process it houses.

The concept draws from African cultural heritage β€” the concentric rhythms of Zulu beads and bowls, the symbolic language of Andinkra, the form of the African drum β€” translated into a contemporary architectural expression that is uncluttered, unadorned and legible.

Truth and justice demand nothing less.

At Design Scape Architects, concept is never decoration. It is the foundation on which every decision is made.

Architecture begins where words do. πŸ›οΈ

Before a single line is drawn on the Durban High Court, the question had to be asked: what is a court building, really? Not just its function β€” its essential purpose.

It is a governmental institution. A civic space. Part of a complex judicial system. A place that touches the widest possible spectrum of society β€” from the most vulnerable to those who enforce the law on their behalf.

Understanding that purpose β€” deeply, not just functionally β€” is what drives every design decision that follows.

At Design Scape Architects, we believe a successful architectural response depends entirely on grasping what a building is truly for. The Durban High Court is one of the most meaningful briefs we have ever had the privilege of working on.

What is a schedule of accommodation? πŸ“‹

It is the complete list of spaces a building must contain β€” every room, its function, its minimum area, and its relationship to the spaces around it. A boardroom needs to be near the reception, not the loading bay. A sterile theatre needs separation from general circulation. A primary classroom needs a certain floor area per learner.

The schedule of accommodation is one of the first documents produced in any well-run project. It translates the client's operational requirements into spatial terms before a single line is drawn β€” and it governs every design decision that follows.

Get it wrong and the building never quite works, no matter how well it is designed.

At Design Scape Architects, the schedule drives the brief before the brief drives the design β€” because you can't design the right building without first knowing exactly what it needs to contain.

Designed around how South Africans actually live. 🏑

Lake Michelle in Noordhoek was conceived around the outdoor way of life β€” entertaining, connection to the landscape, natural ventilation and the quality of light that changes through the day and across the seasons.

At Design Scape Architects, residential design begins with how a family actually lives. The architecture follows from that β€” not the other way around.

3 reasons buildings age poorly πŸ—οΈ

1️⃣ Materials chosen for appearance rather than durability β€” they look good on day one and deteriorate within a decade

2️⃣ No maintenance strategy built into the design β€” access panels missing, drainage inaccessible, facades that can't be cleaned without scaffolding

3️⃣ Inflexible layouts that can't absorb change without major intervention β€” buildings that were designed for one use and can't evolve beyond it

None of these are accidents. They are design decisions β€” made early and felt for decades.

At Design Scape Architects, longevity is a design requirement from the outset. The buildings we design should still be performing well in thirty years.

Load shedding changed the conversation permanently. ⚑

Buildings that rely entirely on municipal power are commercially vulnerable in South Africa today. Every hour of load shedding is a cost to productivity, a risk to perishables, a disruption to operations. For hospitals and healthcare facilities, it is a patient safety issue.

Energy-resilient design β€” correct solar orientation, passive cooling, backup systems integrated at concept stage rather than bolted on afterwards β€” is no longer a premium option. It is responsible architecture.

At Design Scape Architects, energy performance is part of the brief from day one β€” because the buildings we design will still be standing long after today's grid challenges have been resolved, and they must perform under whatever conditions exist.

One firm. Every stage. Every building type.

At Design Scape Architects, we work across residential, commercial, healthcare and public infrastructure β€” from the first conversation about a site to the day a building is handed over.

Every project, regardless of scale or sector, gets the same approach. Listen first. Design with rigour. Build what was agreed.

The entrance is the first spatial experience a building delivers. πŸšͺ

It sets expectations before a word is spoken. It communicates the character of everything that follows β€” the quality of the decisions, the level of care, the intention behind the design. A well-designed entrance tells you that the rest of the building was thought through with the same attention.

A poor entrance does the opposite. It undermines everything that follows, regardless of how good the interior is. And unlike most architectural mistakes, entrance failures are experienced by every single person who visits the building β€” every time they arrive.

At Design Scape Architects, the entrance is never an afterthought. It is where the building's character is first declared.

Heritage context. Modern function. πŸ›οΈ

Standard Bank on Adderley Street sits in one of Cape Town's most prominent commercial corridors β€” a heritage building brought into the present without losing what made it significant.

At Design Scape Architects, working within a heritage context is never a limitation. It is the brief that makes the design more demanding and more rewarding.
