At a shopping centre, solar generation can support more than the individual shops.

At Thembalethu Square in George, SSS installed a 200 kVA grid-tied system with approximately 645 solar panels. The installation supports retail operations, refrigeration, common lighting and security.

Project figures estimate electricity-cost reductions of roughly R30,000 per month, although actual results depend on consumption and the applicable tariff.

It is a reminder that a retail centre’s shared spaces and services are an important part of its energy use too.

A quick update for South African solar owners: Eskom has extended its waiver of registration-related charges until further notice for eligible customer-owned generation systems up to 50 kVA connected directly to its distribution network.

The important distinction is that the fee waiver does not cancel the underlying registration requirements. If your property is supplied by a municipality, its process may be different.

Before relying on a headline, check who supplies electricity to your property and keep your Certificate of Compliance and system documents together.

At Inverroche Distillery in Still Bay, sustainability is part of the bigger story.

SSS designed a hybrid system combining 240 kWp of rooftop solar with 160 kWh of battery storage to support production while reducing grid and generator dependence.
