Jakupa Architects and Urban Designers (Pty) Ltd This page is about Cape Town based Architecture firm Jakupa Architects and Urban Designers (Pty) Ltd

JAKUPA is an architecture and urban design practice that has the express intent to create a rich urban environment through creative engagement in our contemporary urban milieu. Our vision is rooted in humanistic values and in finding appropriate roles for architecture and urbanism. We are driven by a dynamic, academic and practical team with diverse skills that is used to drive our philosophy of research through design practice. We engage in work that ranges from addressing social and ecological issues to responsibly building in today’s market economy. JAKUPA was born through the energy of the revitalized political context within which we work. We believe that the act of city making is a political exercise and acknowledge the responsibility we share in making equitable, productive and sustainable space. The company philosophy unambiguously entrenches their ideals simultaneously through conscientious design and corporate policy. We are therefore proud to acknowledge our 100% HDI status and our ideals to sincere and radical transformation.

Meet Reza - one of our Architectural Technologists!

Reza brings a wealth of experience and a tireless work ethic to the team. His passion lies in production across all stages of a project, with a particular interest in BIM and the evolving technology shaping the built environment.
For Reza, there’s nothing quite like seeing a project he has worked on come to life.

Outside the studio, you’ll find him watching football, collecting comics and action figures, or putting his artistic skills to work through sketching and painting.

Here's to many projects and milestones together, Reza!

Meet Beryl - an Urban Designer!

With an MSc in Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, Beryl's work and interests lie in inclusive public spaces and shaping urban environments that respond meaningfully to social and environmental challenges.

What makes the work especially rewarding for her is seeing ideas come to life and watching people make spaces their own.

Away from the studio, Beryl is happiest at the beach. Her travel favourites include the Spanish Steps in Rome, where memories linger, and the ancient ruins of Tikal in Guatemala, which she describes as a place that “sings to her soul.”

We're excited to keep growing, creating and shaping spaces!

Studio Rewind | UCT Faculty of Health Sciences - Urban Design Framework, 2024

Revisiting our Urban Design Framework for the University of Cape Town’s Faculty of Health Sciences, Jakupa followed a design-led, collaborative process with UCT’s Properties and Services, the FHS Community Group and specialist consultants (Nadeson Consulting Engineers, ITS, Vidamemoria Heritage Consultants, Cape Herstorian and Yes& Studio).

Through a series of design charrettes, knowledge-sharing and co-design sessions, the team developed a deeper understanding of the site and its evolving needs, shaping a proposal that responds to the campus’s future while enhancing its unique landscape character.

At the heart of Jakupa’s methodology is the belief that a framework should be an active document - translating ideas into developable actions. By identifying shared concerns and collectively determining solutions, the framework provides a strategic foundation that can evolve over time while safeguarding its key spatial principles.

From streetscape to pitch⚽

Introducing our 2026 Archi Futsal kit, born from our internal 'Kit Design Competition'. The winning design abstracts our own street view of Table Mountain - a graphic node our mural commissioned in 2023 for our office boundary wall.

A big thank you to our sponsor, Duravit, for bringing the vision to life.

We wish our team all the best for the season ahead - let's bring the gees!

Growth starts with reflection.

Last week Friday, we gathered for our annual 360 Workshop - a day dedicated to reflecting on our journey, aligning our goals, sharing ideas and strengthening relationships that make our team who we are.

From thoughtful conversations to plenty of laughs, it was a reminder that great work is shaped by the people behind it.

Studio Rewind | Cape Town Society for the Blind

Designed as part of the Cape Town Society for the Blind’s long-term redevelopment vision, this project transformed a central courtyard into an accessible facility for visually impaired occupants; enhancing skills training and strengthening connections between crafters, visitors, and the wider community.

Inspired by Salt River’s industrial character, the double-volume workshop features a clear grid of creative spaces, while thoughtful alterations to the existing administration building improved accessibility throughout.
