This morning, neighbourhood watches, Fish Hoek SAPS, Law Enforcement and local security providers did a high-visibility walk around Fish Hoek CBD. The message shared by Captain Binza at the start was clear - we must ensure that our streets are a safe and secure place to do business.

Starting from the Mach 1 offices, our route took us up to the Garden of Remembrance and then down the length of Fish Hoek Main Road. We then headed through the taxi rank and down to the beach. It was fantastic to see the AMS helicopter running practice with NSRI, CMR, Provincial Ambulance Service, amongst others. The jets flying by were pretty spectacular too.

Initiatives like this ensure good communication between role players and highlight areas of concern. A big thank you to all who participated; Fish Hoek was alive with activity today!

🌓Skywatchers, set an alarm: partial lunar eclipse hits Friday morning

Early risers on Friday, 28 August, will get a treat: a deep partial lunar eclipse, with about 96% of the Moon sliding into Earth’s shadow.

Because so much of the Moon is covered, it may glow with a reddish “blood moon” tint — though technically this stays a partial eclipse, since a sliver of the Moon stays outside the darkest shadow.

Timeline (SAST):

• 03:23 — Moon enters Earth’s faint outer shadow (barely noticeable)
• 05:10 — Eclipse becomes clearly visible
• 06:12 — Maximum eclipse, Moon low in the west

Catch it before sunrise — the Moon will be sitting low on the western horizon and setting shortly after peak, so this isn’t one to catch mid-morning. Best view: find an open spot with a clear western horizon before 6am.
