Architecture is rooted in place. And place is rooted in people 🇿🇦

The patterns we inherit, the materials we use, the languages we speak, the stories we carry, the food we share and the cultures we celebrate all contribute to how we understand and shape the world around us.

This Heritage Day, we celebrate the diverse people, traditions and perspectives that make up our EPA family - and the richness they bring to the spaces we create.

Today, we also gathered around a table, sharing some of the tastes and traditions that make South Africa so wonderfully diverse.

Happy Heritage Day from all of us at Elphick Proome Architecture🇿🇦

Two Gold Medals. 37 years of architecture🏅🏅

EPA founding directors George Elphick and Nick Proome have each been awarded the SAIA Gold Medal for Architecture, the institute’s highest individual honour for architecture.

The recognition marks the latest chapter in a 37-year journey that began when George and Nick established EPA in Durban in 1989.

A legacy embodied in 37 years of evolution.

Cotswold Square 🐴 | More than a retail destination, Cotswold Square is designed around people. Shaded walkways, landscaped gathering spaces and carefully scaled architecture encourage movement, connection and moments to pause throughout the development.

Cotswold Square 🐴 | From the weathered steel sculpture that establishes a memorable sense of arrival to tactile brickwork, exposed steel and warm timber - every element reinforces a sense of place. Honest, enduring and contextually responsive, the material palette reflects the surrounding farms and equestrian estates while creating a contemporary architectural identity.

Cotswold Square 🐴 | A contemporary lifestyle centre rooted in the character of Hillcrest's verdant landscape. Fragmented building forms, generous pedestrian streets and distinctive rooflines create a welcoming arrival experience that feels more like a village than a conventional retail centre.
