South Africa was once the third-largest exporter of asbestos. It was popular for manufacturing household flooring and roofing materials.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a carcinogenic mineral. It consists of flexible fibers resistant to heat, electricity and corrosion. These qualities make the mineral useful in many products. They also contribute to asbestos exposure toxicity.

Construction materials contained asbestos because it's an effective insulator. Asbestos in cloth, paper, cement, plastic and other materials makes them stronger.

Inhaling or ingesting asbestos causes fibers to become trapped in the body. Over decades, trapped asbestos fibers can cause inflammation, scarring and cancer.

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos also causes a progressive lung disease called asbestosis.

The Asbestos Abatement Regulations 2020 provides detailed guidelines for the
identification of asbestos and plans for its removal including the use of registered asbestos contractors only.

Asbestos maintenance and removal is classified into three types of asbestos:

▪️𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 1 𝐀𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐬 includes the painting of asbestos cement products that do not need surface preparation or cause any release of asbestos fibres or the removal of less than ten square meters of asbestos or equivalent gutters and piping or asbestos insulating boards where removal work may not be repeated on the same site within a period of six months.

▪️𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 2 𝐀𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐬 includes the repair or encapsulation of asbestos products in a manner that requires surface preparation or the removal of asbestos cement products or asbestos insulating board.

▪️𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 3 𝐀𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐬 includes the removal, repair, or encapsulation of any asbestos and asbestos containing material.
