What does it take to redefine water infrastructure in Africa?

The 2.5 megalitre Edelweiss Water Tower is not only a water storage facility, but also a landmark achievement in engineering innovation, precision construction, and infrastructure delivery.

Recognised with the 2025 Fulton Award for Infrastructure Projects up to R100 Million, this project represents a significant milestone in the advancement of precast concrete technology on the continent.

Designed and constructed by Corestruc's specialist team, the tower incorporates innovative engineering solutions, including internal pipework systems and a precast concrete access staircase housed within the central shaft. The result is a highly efficient, durable, and visually striking structure that combines functionality with engineering excellence.

As one of the first projects of its kind in Africa, the Edelweiss Water Tower demonstrates how advanced precast construction methodologies can deliver complex infrastructure with exceptional quality, reduced construction timelines, and long-term operational performance.

Water infrastructure plays a critical role in supporting growing communities, industries, and municipalities. Projects such as this showcase how innovative construction techniques can help meet these demands while setting new benchmarks for the future of infrastructure development.

At Corestruc, we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible through engineered precast structures designed for high-performance builds.

What if major infrastructure projects could be built the same way you build with Lego® blocks?

Manufactured off-site. Delivered to site. Installed with precision.

Precast concrete has been changing the way the world builds for centuries. From ancient civilisations that understood the value of modular construction to today's engineers delivering complex infrastructure at unprecedented speed, the principle remains the same: manufacture first, assemble later.

In this video, they explore the world of precast concrete construction and how it is transforming the delivery of infrastructure across South Africa and beyond.

Discover how precast elements are engineered, manufactured, transported and assembled to create structures that are not only durable and cost-effective, but capable of significantly reducing construction programmes when compared to conventional construction methods.

The video also features one of Africa's most innovative water infrastructure projects, a precast concrete water tower delivered by Corestruc. Through interviews with the project team, they explored the engineering challenges, manufacturing processes, logistics coordination and collaboration required to bring a first-of-its-kind structure to life.

From water reservoirs and water towers to bridges, stadia and commercial developments, precast concrete continues to play a critical role in modern construction.

In this video you'll discover:

• What precast concrete is and how it works
• The history of modular concrete construction
• How precast elements are manufactured in controlled environments
• The advantages of precast versus conventional construction
• Why precast is becoming increasingly important for infrastructure delivery
• Insights from a landmark South African water infrastructure project
• The role of planning, engineering and collaboration in successful project delivery

At Corestruc, we believe successful construction starts long before the first crane arrives on site. It begins with engineering, manufacturing, planning and precision.

People often see the finished structure.
What they don't always see is what happens before it arrives on site.

The planning. The engineering. The manufacturing process. The quality controls. The people behind every element.

This video offers a look inside the environment where many of our precast systems are produced and prepared for projects across South Africa.

It's a reminder that successful construction doesn't start on site. It starts long before that.

In precast construction, the work that protects a project often happens long before any activity is visible on site.
What people see are the cranes, the deliveries and the installation teams.

What they don't always see is everything that has already taken place behind the scenes.

The design has been coordinated.
The manufacturing programme has been planned.
Quality controls have been implemented.
Transport routes have been assessed.
Lifting requirements have been considered.
Site access has been confirmed.
Installation sequencing has been mapped out.

None of these happen in isolation. Each step influences the next.

If transport and lifting are not considered during design, challenges eventually surface on site.

If manufacturing is not aligned to installation requirements, unnecessary pressure enters the programme.

If site readiness is overlooked, project teams are left solving problems that should have been removed much earlier.

That is why early technical involvement matters.

Precast concrete is not simply a collection of components. It is a construction methodology that performs best when design, manufacturing, logistics and installation are treated as one coordinated delivery system.

That is where project certainty begins.

The real cost of infrastructure.
In South Africa, an estimated R400 billion is required to address water infrastructure backlogs. At the same time, 73% of municipal systems are rated poor or critical, and nearly 47% of treated water is lost through leaks and failing assets.

These failures are often due to variability during construction - shortened curing, inconsistent cover, or marginal compaction. Cast-in-place concrete is inherently sensitive to these conditions, with the consequences only emerging years later as premature deterioration.

The industry is shifting toward performance-based specifications and durability testing to address this.

Precast concrete offers a more controlled solution. Manufactured in factory environments, it reduces variability through consistent curing, compaction, and material quality. Elements are tested before installation, ensuring compliance and improving durability.
This increases the likelihood of achieving design life, reducing maintenance demands and lifecycle cost.

Build for durability.
Build for lifecycle performance.
Build with precast concrete.

When infrastructure fails early, everyone pays for it.
First to build it, and then again to fix it.

Across South Africa, structures are not always lasting as long as they should. Corrosion, weather, and construction variability all play a role in how quickly things start to break down. That’s why the focus is changing.

We can no longer just build something that works today. We need to be building something that still works decades from now.
By moving construction into controlled factory environments, we reduce the small errors that can lead to big problems later on.
Stronger structures. Longer lifespan. Less need for repair.
Because durability is essential.

New Look for Corestruc

Corestruc has grown over the years alongside the infrastructure projects we help deliver.

From bridges and reservoirs to water towers and large precast structures, the scale of our work has continued to expand.
With that growth, we felt it was the right time to refresh the way the business is presented.

We introduce the new Corestruc corporate identity.
The updated look reflects the strength and precision that goes into every structure we deliver.

While the brand evolves, the work remains the same - designing, manufacturing and installing precast structures that support major infrastructure.

A good round of golf has a way of bringing people together - and that’s exactly the spirit behind the golf day Corestruc recently took part in.

While construction and infrastructure are what we do every day, staying connected to the communities where we work is just as important. Events like this give everyone the chance to step away from the site for a few hours, meet new people, share a few laughs and enjoy some friendly competition on the course.

It was a great day spent with businesses, community members and professionals from across the area - with plenty of good shots, and a few that found the rough.

At Corestruc we believe strong partnerships, like strong structures, are built on collaboration, trust and shared moments along the way.

A great day out on the course.
