Headed by lead architect Ernst Fraser, Framework Design is a small interior architecture studio based in Cape Town, specializing in structural and cosmetic renovations and design. Having worked in some of the most prolific firms in Cape Town for more than 10 years, Ernst set up his own architecture practice in early 2015. Inspired by the work of stalwarts such as Tom Kundig, Bjarke Ingels and John Lautner, Ernst has a passion for well-considered, rational and contextual design. At Framework Design, we love a collaborative approach with clients, and our style tends toward organic and functional forms that result in timeless contemporary spaces. We take pride in answering our clients’ needs without losing sight of budgetary requirements and aesthetic preferences.

What happens when two apartments become one?

At Project Aquarius, two adjacent ocean-facing apartments were brought together to create one generous family home.

The brief wasn’t just to make more room. It was about making the newly combined home feel connected, considered and easy to live in.

Walls came down, the layouts opened up, and the home was reworked around the ocean views.

Exploring concepts for a new apartment renovation in Sea Point — and this time, we’re bringing AI into the process.

After a few experiments (and some questionable results), we’re starting to see more promising ways to visualise ideas for our clients.

The right home might just need a little imagination.

An outdated kitchen, awkward layout or underused room doesn’t mean a property has reached its potential.

The question is: What could this space become?

In this renovation, an unused roof void was transformed into a spacious study creating valuable living space without extending the building’s footprint.

The project is starting to take shape with timber flooring, external cladding and decking by Zuberi bringing the design together.

A few more details, and we’ll be ready for the summer months.

The biggest transformations don't always come from extensions.

In this compact apartment, opening up the living space, introducing a new kitchen, and borrowing natural light completely changed the experience of the home.

Summer starts at home. ☀️

Before the days get longer and outdoor living takes over, a few thoughtful design checks can make all the difference.

→ Make the most of natural light
→ Create seamless connections between indoors and out
→ Check shading and ventilation for warmer days
→ Refresh outdoor spaces for entertaining
→ Choose materials that can handle the coastal elements
