The Grace Conservatory, The Homestead, Plumstead, Cape Town, 2026.

A graceful new steel structure surrounded by a heritage building, dissolves into its flourishing garden setting, its floor-to-ceiling glazing creating a continuous dialogue between interior, landscape, and its surrounding history. Designed as a flexible setting for intimate gatherings and celebrations, the space is defined by openness, light, and a carefully softened threshold between inside and out.

The result is an elegant, light-filled space where structure recedes, nature takes centre stage, and architecture becomes a graceful frame for gathering.

House Nxumalo, Alexandra Township, Johannesburg, 1988.

The house is situated on a sloping north facing site. The house is located on three levels and entry occurs at the mid level. At this level is the kitchen – from here one moves upwards to the bedrooms and down to the living area. All levels are visible from the entrance level. The house is 90 m² in area.

The house continues a fascination of the architect with two ideas. The first idea concerns the section as a generator of form which is clear from the design drawings. Also there is the idea of literal transparency – amongst other matters this means being able to understand the spatial strategy of the house by the treatment of the external facades.

The structural frame is exaggerated by placing all other external components within the frame. In this way transparency is reinforced by revealing in the clearest possible way the manner of construction. A steel frame is employed in reference to the mining technology prevalent in the Witwatersrand and all other materials used are ubiquitous in Johannesburg.

Sectionally the house is split in the middle with a roof-light which floods the interior of the house from the top to the bottom. This natural light perceptually increase the sense of space in what is a very small house.

Window and openings and roof overhangs are all employed to provide appropriate shading, decent cross ventilation and adequate natural light. By using a framed structure and employing a 75 mm sandwich infill panel rather than a conventional 280 mm cavity brick wall seven square meters of extra floor space was created – in a 90 square meter house this represents an additional room.
The house is resourceful in that it attempts to achieve maximum ends with minimum means.

House Nicholas, Richmond, Johannesburg, 2014.

The conversion of a single-storey bungalow in Richmond, Johannesburg involves the addition of a second floor. The client owns one of the largest privately held collections of Coca-Cola memorabilia in the world.

The addition of the second floor will provide the space for the museum. The house’s architectural character is derived from the extraordinary legacy of art-deco architecture in Johannesburg.

The top floor comprises a large, five-meter-tall space, which is oriented towards the Hillbrow tower in the distance. This side of the room opens up entirely towards the view.

House Sapieka, Hout Bay, Cape Town, 2001. Extension completed 2012.

The house explores the relationship between geometry, landscape and view. Conceived as an exercise in romantic functionalism, it demonstrates how modest means can produce architecture of clarity, presence and enduring character.

Wrapped around a sheltered courtyard, the house is carefully positioned to frame views of Hout Bay Harbour, Chapman's Peak and the surrounding mountains. Angled walls bind the building to its site, while a single folded roof responds to the natural topography and recalls the profile of the tugboats below. Despite its compact scale, the house achieves a richness of space through light, orientation and a close dialogue with its landscape.

Beach House, Castle Rock, Cape Town, 2017.

Positioned within a protected coastal landscape, the house explores the relationship between architecture, climate and place. Responding to a compact site and a highly sensitive ecological context, the project demonstrates how careful intervention can amplify, rather than compete with, its surroundings.

Organised between two parallel walls, the house steps towards the beach while framing the mountain beyond. Openings, materiality and natural ventilation are carefully calibrated to the changing coastal environment, with a palette of sea sand, crushed shells and site stone rooting the building in its landscape. Rounded forms soften its presence within the fynbos, allowing the architecture to recede in favour of the site.

St. Cyprian’s School Life Centre, Oranjezicht, Cape Town, 2012.

The space inside the building develops the idea of Archaic Space generated by precise geometry both in plan and section.

The school needed a flexible space that could be used for educational exercises during teaching periods and double up as a sports pavillion and rehersal space after hours.
