The Berg River has been identified as a key feature within the Climate Partnership due to its ecological and economic importance in the municipal area. Drakenstein Municipality applied for funding to Engagement Global’s NAKOPA Programme (Partnership Projects for Sustainable Local Development) in 2020 to improve the Berg River. The project area includes the riparian area of the Berg River between the Market Street and the Long Street bridges. The components of the project include:
1 - Development of the Berg River walkway: The walkway was constructed to improve pedestrian movement between the Central Business District of Paarl and the various civil services located upstream of the river.
2 - Invasive alien vegetation removal: Continuous invasive alien vegetation removal has taken place to increase water availability in the river system.
3 - Ecological rehabilitation: Indigenous plants are reintroduced in the riparian area to improve the ecological condition of the river.
