Mossel Bay, we need your voices. 💙
Earlier this year, council’s report found about 2,700 government-built homes with asbestos roofs: R152 million to replace, and no government funding to help.
🚛 What most people don’t know: there’s no accredited asbestos landfill in the Garden Route. Every load has to be trucked to Vissershok in Cape Town, and that trip is the biggest part of the cost.
🙋 So here’s the ask: a safe municipal asbestos collection point in Mossel Bay, with the municipality covering transport to Vissershok. Homeowners would only cover the removal itself. Other provinces have funded asbestos roof replacement before (Seshego, Limpopo: R33m for 1,500 roofs), so it can be done.
📣 Share this with your neighbours and tell your ward councillor.
In the meantime, don’t panic. A roof in good condition, left alone, isn’t a danger to your family. Just follow the rules:
❌ Don’t drill, cut, sand or power wash it (Asbestos Abatement Regulations, 2020, Reg 24)
❌ Don’t remove it yourself. Roof removal is Type 2 work and needs a registered asbestos contractor.
