Wax on, wax off — this time, no bruises. My last piece was about stitching myself back together, one thread at a time. This one's gentler — no needle, no thread, just wax, heat, and a lot of scraping back to find the light underneath. Different process, different place I was in when I made it. Can you feel the difference? New painting lands in Studio notes this week — link in bio to get it first

On the Easel Today… 🎨✨

Finally finished the first 3 meter layer! Now transitioning over to oils—and there are still 20 more layers of paint to go.

I’m already incorporating cold wax into the process to build that beautiful, rich, translucent feel. Building depth and luminosity layer by layer is a slow journey, but so rewarding as the painting begins to take on a life of its own!

Stay tuned to see how this piece evolves over the next few stages. 🖌️✨

✨ "The foundation: Childhood memories in translucent ink."

After mapping out the 6-decade grid on Lesley's 3-meter canvas, I’ve completed the base layers on the first four blocks—each panel representing a chapter of his life.

For the very bottom layer, I chose ink: thin, fluid, and translucent.

Childhood memories are like that—bright, full of life, and soaking deep into the very foundation of who we become. Even as heavy layers of cold wax and oil are built up, scraped back, and textured in the stages to come, these vibrant ink washes will remain underneath, giving light and atmosphere to everything built above them.

🔴 SOLD / Private Collection — Washing Over Me

There is something deeply fulfilling about seeing a piece find its forever wall. Here is Washing Over Me (150 x 120 cm, Oil) installed in the beautiful home of collectors Trevor and Laura.

This painting was born out of a moment of deep reflection: "In the midst of fire, the spirit washes over me, to steer and direct, in mercy and hope."

As an artist, my process is about capturing those quiet spiritual transitions—the moments where chaos turns into direction, and intensity turns into peace. Seeing how the light and space in Trevor and Laura's home bring out the subtle oil glazes in this piece is a wonderful reminder of why I paint.

🟢 AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE — Remnants and Remembering

"Remember the good. Do not forget the bad. But allow both to soften at the edges."
This piece reflects the quiet, necessary tension between holding on and releasing. The intentional blurring throughout the composition speaks to integration rather than erasure—a visual meditation on how our past experiences weave together to shape who we are today.

Created with rich layers of oil and cold wax, embedded resin, and hand-stitched threads across the canvas surface, Remnants and Remembering carries a tactile, physical presence that invites quiet reflection.

🎨 Artwork Details: • Title: Remnants and Remembering • Status: 🟢 Available • Price: $2,300.00 USD (Rand equivalent available upon inquiry) • Dimensions: 101.5 × 120 cm (39.96 × 47.24 in) • Medium: Oil, Cold Wax, Resin, Threads & Hand Stitching on Canvas • Canvas & Stretchers: • Paints & Mediums: | | David Kvart

A 3-meter canvas divided into 6 decades of life.

When preparing a monumental 3 x 1.5 meter canvas for a private commission, the structure itself becomes part of the story.
Lesley has lived over 60 years. To honor that journey, this painting is being constructed in 6 distinct sections of 75 x 75 cm—each panel symbolizing a decade of his life

Life doesn’t happen all at once; it unfolds in chapters, seasons, and sections. Some decades are smooth and quiet, while others are marked by deep textures and hard-won wisdom. By dividing the canvas into these six panels, every stage gets its own foundation before the layers of cold wax and oil weave them all together.

🎨 "A Life Well Lived: 60 years across 3 meters of canvas."

Fast-tracking the foundation of Lesley's private commission: A Life Well Lived.
Lesley has lived over six decades. To honor that journey, this monumental 3 x 1.5 meter painting is structured in six 75 x 75 cm panel sections—each representing a decade of life, growth, and hard-won wisdom.

In this phase, I’m laying down thin, translucent ink washes across the bottom panels. Like our earliest childhood memories, this vibrant ink soaks deep into the canvas foundation. Even as heavy layers of cold wax and oil are built up, scraped, and textured in the stages to come, this luminous base will shine through everything built above it.
