What role should a UPS play — and when is a standby generator needed as well?

We’ve launched the first edition of the Emerald Insights newsletter, where we’ll be taking a deeper look at practical topics around critical power, infrastructure and business continuity.

In our first edition, we explore the different roles of UPS systems and standby generators.

A generator can provide power through a longer outage once it has started and taken over the required load. A UPS can provide immediate continuity to selected equipment while that process takes place — but whether an operation needs one, the other, or both depends on the requirement.

The discussion starts with a simple question:
What happens to the operation when this load loses power?

Read the first edition of Emerald Insights and let us know what technical topics you’d like to see us explore in future editions:

Planning standby power involves more than selecting a generator. Fuel availability, expected loading, operating time and running cost all matter when the generator is required to keep a site operational.

In Emerald Insights Episode 06, we look at our Generator Fuel Consumption Calculator. It helps turn a planned operating scenario into preliminary estimates for hourly fuel use, total litres required, running cost and tank autonomy.

Enter the generator size, expected load, runtime, diesel price and tank capacity to explore how changing the assumptions can affect the outcome.

The calculator is intended as a planning aid. Final fuel and operating requirements should be confirmed against the selected generator manufacturer’s data and the conditions of the site.

GENERATOR SIZING CALCULATOR

How much generator capacity could your essential load require?

Our Generator Sizing Calculator helps you develop a preliminary standby-power estimate using your connected load, power factor, diversity, motor-starting allowance, future expansion and preferred generator loading target.

The result shows how the initial load develops into a recommended generator kW and kVA value before suggesting an appropriate standard generator size.

This makes the calculator useful for early planning, budget discussions and comparing possible system sizes. It does not replace a detailed technical assessment. The final design must still be checked against the real site load, starting currents, environmental conditions, fuel arrangement, voltage regulation and the selected manufacturer's data.

Try it for yourself:

Enter the load, review the recommendation and speak to Emerald when the final generator design needs to be confirmed.

EMERALD INSIGHTS | EPISODE 04
UPS RUNTIME CALCULATOR

How long will a UPS battery bank support your connected equipment during a power interruption?

Our UPS Runtime Calculator helps produce an early-stage battery-autonomy estimate using the connected load, power factor, battery quantity, voltage, Ah rating, parallel strings, inverter efficiency and battery-ageing allowance.

The result provides an estimated runtime and shows the key battery and discharge values behind the calculation, making it easier to compare assumptions before progressing to detailed design.

The estimate should not be treated as a final battery selection. Actual runtime depends on the specific UPS and battery manufacturer data, approved end-cell voltage, battery condition, temperature, measured site load, redundancy requirements and future load growth.

Try the UPS Runtime Calculator for yourself:

Enter the load and battery configuration, review the estimate and see how changes to the assumptions affect expected autonomy.

UPS LOAD CALCULATOR

How much UPS capacity does your connected equipment require?

Our UPS Load Calculator helps you build a preliminary equipment schedule using realistic quantities, wattages, power factor, diversity and design margin.

The calculator converts these inputs into estimated kW, kVA and current before suggesting a preliminary UPS size and estimated system loading.

It is a practical tool for early project planning, budget discussions and comparing possible equipment sizes—but it does not replace a detailed technical assessment. Runtime, redundancy, load behaviour, future expansion, site conditions and manufacturer requirements must still be validated before final equipment selection.

Try the calculator for yourself:

DISCOVER EMERALD — EPISODE 07
REAL EXPERIENCE. PRACTICAL TOOLS.

Critical power planning should not begin with guesswork.

For Episode 07 of Discover Emerald, we’re visiting the Resources page of the new Emerald Infrastructure Solutions website—a practical workspace developed from real project experience.

The Emerald Critical Power Workspace brings early-stage planning tools, technical guides and project insights together in one place. Visitors can explore a connected critical power strategy covering UPS systems, battery runtime, standby generation, solar and battery storage, and important design considerations.

These tools are intended to help people better understand their requirements, ask more informed questions and identify what still needs to be confirmed through proper technical assessment.

This episode is only the introduction.

Over the next few episodes of Emerald Insights, we’ll explore the calculators individually and work through practical examples—showing what information goes into each calculation, how the estimate is developed and which real-world factors still need to be considered.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | EPISODE 03

What does it take to transform a restricted 25m² sixth-floor space into a resilient server room?

Careful planning—and the integration of every critical layer.

For this Cape Town C*D project, Emerald Infrastructure Solutions designed and delivered a complete server-room environment for a regional office and call centre. The installation brought together dual UPS power paths, a dedicated 165kVA standby generator, redundant precision cooling, raised access flooring, fire detection and suppression, dual fibre routing and structured cabling for approximately 400 user data points.

Access presented another challenge: the generator could not be transported through the building and had to be craned from street level to the sixth floor through a carefully coordinated road closure and rigging operation.

The completed server room was developed around Tier II design principles, supporting a 99.741% availability target while allowing the client’s critical infrastructure to be migrated with minimal operational disruption.

This project demonstrates that resilience does not come from one piece of equipment. It comes from power, cooling, protection and connectivity working together as one integrated system.

Planned. Integrated. Commissioned.

DISCOVER EMERALD — EPISODE 06

Built around your environment.

In Episode 05, we explored some of the projects that bring Emerald’s experience to life. This week, we’re looking at the different environments that shape those solutions.

Critical infrastructure cannot be approached in exactly the same way everywhere.

A commercial office, manufacturing facility, healthcare environment, public-sector operation and server room may all depend on reliable power—but their operational risks, priorities and consequences of downtime are very different.

That is why Emerald begins by understanding the environment: what must remain operational, what risks need to be managed and how the infrastructure will need to perform and be supported over time.

Our Industries page explores how this thinking applies across government, commercial, industrial, education, healthcare, facilities management and technology environments, as well as the technical teams and consulting engineers responsible for delivering them.

Because reliable infrastructure begins with understanding the environment it serves.

EMERALD INSIGHTS | EPISODE 02
A UPS bridges the gap. The requirement defines the solution.

In Episode 01, we explored a fundamental principle of critical power: when utility power fails and standby generation takes time to assume the load, the UPS provides the continuity required to bridge that gap.

But that principle is only the starting point.

Not every critical load has the same requirements, and not every operating environment presents the same challenges. Load characteristics, interruption tolerance, required autonomy, redundancy, existing infrastructure, environmental conditions, control philosophy and future requirements can all influence how a critical-power solution should be designed.

That is why two facilities requiring UPS protection may ultimately require very different architectures.

In Episode 02, we take the simple principle from Episode 01 and expand it into the engineering considerations behind the solution — from a single UPS system through redundant, independent and modular configurations.

The equipment should follow the requirement, not define it.

One solution does not fit all — because one risk profile does not fit all.

Swipe through the carousel to explore the thinking behind the design.

DISCOVER EMERALD — EPISODE 05

Experience you can see.

Throughout the Discover Emerald series, we have been taking you through our new website one page at a time—sharing more about who we are, what we do and how our work comes together.

For Episode 05, we are exploring the Emerald Projects page.

This is where experience becomes visible through selected work across UPS and battery systems, standby generation, solar and energy storage, electrical infrastructure, server rooms and lifecycle maintenance.

Each project began with a different environment and operational requirement. The solutions may differ, but the thinking behind them remains consistent: understand the challenge, engineer the right response and deliver infrastructure built around reliability, safety and long-term performance.

The battery and inverter installation featured here is one example of that experience brought to life.
