2017 has seen us establish an in-house 3D studio that specialises in 3D renderings, videos and drone shots. Lastly, we also assist with architectural photography shoots and styling. Our portfolio is growing rapidly and includes an array of award-winning houses and several high-profile publications. With many international clients on our list, we are slowly building up recognition for our work from around the world. We are proud of our heritage and the city we live in and we are excited to be able to contribute to its amazing success and its beautiful architecture.

Last year we spent so much time travelling in and out of Franschhoek, watching this home take shape and spending countless days here with our clients.

Returning for the final shoot felt different. The house is finished, the garden has grown beautifully and our clients have properly settled in. When we asked how it feels to live here now, they told us how naturally the house fits the way they live. After everything that went into creating it together, that was wonderful to hear.

Our work on the house may be complete, but this isn’t really a goodbye. We look forward to returning for conversations and visits, watching the garden continue to grow and seeing the home change with the people living in it.

For now, a little behind the scenes from a beautiful day in Franschhoek. We captured so much and cannot wait to share more.

Every room in this house makes its own decision about colour. Each one follows its own logic: restrained in one room, complete commitment in the next. The gap between them is the whole point, and it's deliberate throughout.

Ground level stays dark and quiet. Move up and the palette opens completely, room by room, each with its own identity. Different spaces called for different decisions, not one rule applied throughout the build.

Our client knew precisely what he wanted in every room and worked with us and the builder on site to get each decision right. That level of clarity from the start let us commit fully where commitment made sense, and hold back where restraint served the space better. Move through the house and colour changes its role almost every time you enter a new space, sometimes the whole story, sometimes just an edge of it.

Yesterday the mist was thick over the city, the mountain gone and the streets grey and quiet beneath it. It was that kind of morning where the day reconfigures itself early. A shoot gets rescheduled, a plan gets moved, and you find yourself working around conditions rather than the calendar.

This morning the mountain is back, the streets are warm, and the light is clean across the rooftops. The same view from the same window, twenty-four hours later, looking like an entirely different season.

Cape Town shifts between these two versions of itself regularly and without much warning, and the longer you're here the more you build that into how you plan, how you work, how you move through the city. ��

It's one of those things that makes this city what it is.

This Franschhoek property looks straight into the mountains rather than out over the vineyards, and the design leans into that. Outdoor spaces are shaped for wind-sheltered living, screened and layered so they can be used through most of the year.

The pool sits right at the centre of it, both the foreground and the backdrop to how the house is used day to day. Every room takes in the view, and the layout allows the whole property to open up for entertaining or close down into smaller, more private spaces as the owners need it to.

An entrance sets up the first few moments of moving through a house.

At this Fresnaye Villa, arrival begins in the entrance garden, a pause between the street and the door before the house opens up beyond it.�

Once through, the entrance hall opens straight onto the garden beyond. The stair sits to the side in its own double volume, keeping the hall clear so that view carries through as you move further into the house.

That relationship between the garden, the stair and the hall is set from the first few steps inside.

For us, the entrance is about setting up how you move through the spaces that follow.

Seven months can make a remarkable difference.

When we visited this Franschhoek Villa earlier this year, the garden was still finding its footing. Young planting sat within freshly prepared beds, with plenty of space left to fill.

Returning this July, we were surprised and excited to find a beautiful, flourishing garden, beyond anything we could have expected in such a short space of time. Paths are now framed by shrubs and flowers, the garden has softened the edges of the architecture, and what once felt newly planted now feels established and full of life.

Against the mountain backdrop, the garden feels as though it has always belonged here. Finally seeing this project in its intended setting, with a flourishing garden and mountain views, is truly special.

We drove back into Franschhoek this July, just to spend the day in the valley again.

Winter brings a different side of the landscape into focus. The vineyards shift through shades of gold and rust, many of the trees stand bare, and the mountains feel especially prominent in the crisp, clear light. Our lovely clients recently shared how different the valley feels at this time of year, with softer winter light, greener mountains, and views that take on an entirely different character.

Last year had us travelling in and out of Franschhoek almost weekly. Between site visits, meetings and time spent in the valley, it became a place we got to know well.

We miss being there, but we have more to share soon.

A kitchen in a home designed for both everyday living and large scale entertaining carries a particular responsibility. It has to work hard without showing it, and step back when the occasion calls for it.

At Fresnaye Villa, the kitchen and scullery were planned as a system. The scullery absorbs what catering demands so the kitchen stays clear when it needs to. The layout considers how the whole house serves itself, from an intimate dinner through to an event that extends outdoors.

The material palette here is strict and consistent. Natural stone and timber runs through into the joinery itself. The kitchen sits within the same palette as the rest of the house, so moving between the two feels uninterrupted rather than like a change of room.

The large sliding doors mean the kitchen can participate fully in the life of the house or withdraw from it entirely. For a home that hosts at this scale, that range is as important as anything else in the design.

Knowing what to keep is as important as knowing what to build.

At this Welgedacht Villa, selected exterior walls were retained while everything within them was reconceived. The interior was completely redesigned, outdoor living was integrated directly into the living areas, and the new structure was terraced into the landscape rather than imposed on it.

That process of editing, deciding what stays, what goes, and what gets reimagined, is where a lot of the real design work in a renovation happens.

The owners now live in a house that feels entirely new, not a renovation patched over an old house but a home reconsidered from the inside out.

Looking back through old photos from this Franschhoek project, a few made us smile.

Somewhere along the way, wet cement and wheelbarrows led to a series of spray painted warnings around site. Our contractor William and his team found their own way of keeping everyone alert, and clearly had some fun doing it.

Looking back now, with the house complete, these small moments feel like part of the story too.

We miss moments like these, and we look forward to visiting again soon.
