Jenny Mills Architects Listening drives our design. Full-service architecture studio. Based in Cape Town, South Africa. Love for form and composition lies at the very heart of our work.

We are artists on a quest to sculpt existing spaces in co-operation with nature. Our buildings are exciting and beautiful. They bring something both of ourselves and our clients into the world. We work in close partnership with our clients, focusing on their needs and stylistic preferences. JMA is an established, full-service architectural practice. We offer architectural, urban, product and interior design consulting services.

2017 has seen us establish an in-house 3D studio that specialises in 3D renderings, videos and drone shots. Lastly, we also assist with architectural photography shoots and styling. Our portfolio is growing rapidly and includes an array of award-winning houses and several high-profile publications. With many international clients on our list, we are slowly building up recognition for our work from around the world. We are proud of our heritage and the city we live in and we are excited to be able to contribute to its amazing success and its beautiful architecture.

We’re opening our Bree Street studio again for Open Studios 2026.

Join us on Wednesday 14 October from 5pm to 8pm for an evening in the studio, with projects, drawings and more of what we’ve been working on over the past year on display.

Sadé joined JMA early this year as an intern, working closely with Jenny on new and on-going projects , and developing drawings and renders for the JMA portfolio. Since she’s arrived, she’s always brought a vibrant energy to our office and has been a great addition to our team.�

”I’m really enjoying my time here at JMA. I learn so much everyday and I’ve picked up so many new tips and techniques when it comes to design and visualisation.

Through my involvement in a variety of projects, I’ve been able to develop my skills in rendering, as well as producing and refining drawings and other visual material at different stages of a project.

Some of the highlights for me have been working on the renders for our Among the Trees and Swakopmund projects. I’ve particularly enjoyed finding ways to communicate the team’s ideas visually and seeing them come to life.

Each project has taught me something different and has given me the opportunity to learn new ways of approaching design, presentation, and visual communication. And unlike university projects, it’s been rewarding to see how an idea can evolve throughout the architectural process within the industry.

Cape Town was showing off a little this week.

After thunder and lightning through the night, the heat arrived early the next morning and stayed with us through the day.

It made the contrast inside our Bree Street office even more noticeable. The south-west-facing boardroom stays cooler through the warmer parts of the day, with much of the stronger direct sun kept out.

A small reminder of how quickly the weather can shift here, and how much the spaces we spend our days in respond to it.

Llandudno on a clear day, with the rocky coastline stretching towards Lion’s Head and the Twelve Apostles beyond.

From here, the ocean, mountain and houses all sit within the same view, each one becoming more or less present as you move through the area. It is a part of Cape Town where the landscape feels especially close, with very little separation between the built edge, the mountain and the water below.

We will be spending more time in Llandudno again soon as a new project begins to take shape here, and it feels good to be returning to this part of the peninsula.

We first worked with this client on his home in the Auas Berg outside Windhoek, designed around the landscape and the way he brings family and friends together. When he began planning a holiday home on the Swakopmund beachfront, he came back to us.�

The setting is completely different, and the house responds accordingly. Wind off the Atlantic shapes where you can comfortably spend time outside, so the fire pit sits on the more sheltered entrance side of the house, with a view straight through the living room to the ocean beyond. On the beachfront side, the terrace steps directly onto the sand.�

Pale driftwood toned timber and rubble stone form part of a material palette grounded in the colours and textures of the coast.�

Ocean views are not all the same design problem. The site, the scale, the building type and the relationship between inside and outside all change what the view actually requires of the architecture.

At a penthouse level, the view is total and the design has to honour that completely. Every opening, every room orientation, every finish choice is made in service of what lies beyond the glass. At a low-scale coastal bungalow, the view has to be earned. Excavation, level planning and careful placement mean the ocean stays visible from within a building that barely registers on the hillside.

Each project asks its own question. The approach changes every time. What stays constant is that the view comes first and the architecture finds its place around that.

Late morning above Noordhoek, with the land falling away towards the lagoon in one direction and the open coast in the other.

At this early stage, before a single wall has been drawn or built, these are the conditions that begin to shape how we think about the project. Two very different relationships with the water, the mountain rising behind, and a landscape that already has a strong presence of its own.

For now, it remains completely untouched. A beautiful starting point for a new project, and one we are excited to begin working with.
