UTTE is very excited to share that the Soweto Caracas Centre has received both a Merit Award and the President’s Award at the 2026 Corobrik SAIA Awards.

We are incredibly grateful to receive the President’s Award, as it is a special honour that is not awarded annually, but only when a project is considered truly deserving. It is particularly encouraging to see social impact through design being recognised and celebrated across the national industry.

A big thank you to and for these awards. Thank you also to our team, our international collaborators at , and the wider professional team, without whom this project would not have been possible. Lastly, thank you for capturing the community and centre.

We are proud, humbled and energised to keep building, learning, and making a difference through design and development!

🚨🌧️ Emergency Storm Relief, Cape Town 🌧️🚨

Severe storms and flooding have caused significant damage across many of the vulnerable communities in which we work, leaving many families facing urgent clean-up and repair needs. The devastation has also highlighted the critical need to strengthen resilience ahead of further winter storms.

UTTE is mobilising immediate support on the ground, but we need your help.

Please support affected families by contributing relief items or funds towards emergency repairs and recovery efforts.

Introducing our rooftop garden 🌿

Above the Soweto-Caracas Community Centre sits a garden — grown by the community, for the community.

In a place where space is limited, the roof becomes productive ground.

What was once just a roof is now a place to grow food, share knowledge, and build opportunity together.

This is just the beginning.

Join us this First Thursday, 5 March, for UTTE’s Artist Walkabout:

INSIDE ‘HABITAT’: A Photographic Dialogue of Homes, Hope, and Humanity

This compelling exhibition brings together the work of Endinalo Moni, a talented 22-year-old photographer from Site C, Khayelitsha — recently featured in VISI Magazine and selected by the V&A Waterfront for its Artist Alliance Incubation Programme — alongside Are Carlsen, a Norwegian photographer internationally recognised for his work on architecture and the urban environment.

Through their distinct yet complementary lenses, they present layered perspectives on township life in Khayelitsha, Cape Town — revealing powerful stories of resilience, dignity, and place. The exhibition also provides insight into the context in which UTTE is pushing boundaries and delivering innovative, scalable housing solutions that are shaping communities across Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Enjoy a glass of wine as you experience this thought-provoking body of work, hosted in one of the original buildings where First Thursdays first began.

Join us for an engaging evening of conversation and reflection. Endinalo will personally share how townships are often viewed — and re-viewed — through his lens, while Are offers his unique perspective via video.

Can’t join us on the night? The exhibition will continue to run throughout March. We would love to welcome you to our offices for a private viewing — simply get in touch to arrange a visit.
