Joint sealing with Men@WorX 063 193 3939

The correct waterproofing joint sealing method depends on the type of joint (expansion joint, construction joint, wall-to-floor joint, roof joint, etc.), but a standard professional method is:

Waterproofing Joint Sealing Method

1. Prepare the joint

Remove all old sealant, dirt, dust, loose concrete, grease, and moisture.

Ensure the joint is clean and dry.

2. Install a backer rod

Push a closed-cell foam backer rod into the joint to the correct depth.

This controls the sealant depth and prevents three-sided adhesion.

3. Apply primer (if required)

Some polyurethane sealants require a primer on porous surfaces.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Apply the sealant

Use a high-quality polyurethane or hybrid waterproof sealant.

Fill the joint completely without trapping air.

5. Tool the sealant

Smooth the sealant with a jointing tool or spatula while it is still wet.

Ensure good contact with both sides of the joint.

6. Allow to cure

Protect the joint from rain, dust, and traffic until fully cured.

Recommended Sealants

Polyurethane joint sealant (excellent for concrete and movement joints)

MS Polymer (hybrid) sealant

Neutral-cure silicone (best for glass and some façade applications)

Important Tips

Never fill deep joints entirely with sealant—always use a backer rod.

Ensure the joint is completely dry before sealing.

Select a flexible sealant that can accommodate movement without cracking.

This method is commonly used on:

Roof slabs

Balconies

Concrete expansion joints

Wall-to-floor junctions

Retaining walls

Driveways and paving joints
