Pattern matching is one of the most underestimated skills in wallpaper installation — and one of the most visible when it goes wrong.

Here's what's actually involved:
Straight match — the pattern repeats horizontally across every strip.

Straightforward in theory, but any misalignment is immediately obvious to the eye.

Drop match — the pattern offsets by half a repeat between strips. This creates more waste and requires precise calculation before a single strip is cut.

Random match — no repeat to align, but grain direction and tonal variation still need to be managed carefully to avoid visible seams.

Free match murals — each panel is a section of a single large image. The margin for error is zero.

Beyond the match type itself, there's also:

Calculating the correct number of rolls to account for pattern waste

Deciding where to start on each wall so the most prominent seam lands in the least visible spot

Managing pattern continuity around corners, doors, and windows
Accounting for how much the paper will expand once pasted

Get any of these wrong and the result is obvious — misaligned patterns, visible seams, wasted paper, and a room that looks slightly off without the homeowner always being able to explain why.

This is why professional installation isn't just about hanging paper neatly. It's about understanding the material before you even unroll it.
