๐Ÿ˜‚ Every fiberglass pool contractor has that one conversation...

Client: "There are white marks on my pool!"

Us: "Let's have a look."

Arrives on site, scratches the mark with a fingernail...

Us: "It's scale build-up."

Client: "So the fiberglass is defective?"

Us: "No."

Client: "So the renovation failed?"

Us: "No."

Client: "So why are there white marks?"

Us: "Because of water chemistry and maintenance."

Client: "Are you sure?"

Us: internally screaming

The reality is that most white marks we get called out for are simply calcium scale deposits caused by high pH, high calcium levels, poor water balance, or a lack of brushing.

If the mark scratches off, chances are it's sitting ON the fiberglassโ€”not IN the fiberglass.

Fiberglass doesn't create scale.

Water chemistry does.

A beautiful fiberglass pool still requires proper maintenance, regular testing, balanced chemicals, and occasional brushing to stay looking showroom perfect.

Why Winter Is the Best Time to Renovate Your Swimming Pool in Gauteng

Most homeowners think about their swimming pools when summer arrives. Unfortunately, that's also when pool renovation companies become their busiest.

If you're considering resurfacing, converting your pool to fiberglass, repairing cracks, or upgrading your swimming pool, winter is actually the smartest time to get the work done.

1. Beat the Summer Rush

Every year, homeowners wait until the first hot days of spring before deciding to renovate their pools. This creates long waiting lists and delays.

By renovating during winter, your project can often be scheduled sooner, ensuring your pool is ready long before swimming season begins.

2. Enjoy Your Pool When Summer Arrives

Nobody wants to spend the first few weeks of summer looking at a construction site.

Renovating during winter means you'll be relaxing beside a beautiful, fully completed pool while everyone else is still waiting for contractors.

3. Ideal Conditions for Renovation Work

Cooler temperatures create excellent working conditions for pool resurfacing, fiberglass installations, and structural repairs.

This allows contractors to focus on quality workmanship without the extreme heat and frequent summer storms that can sometimes delay projects.

4. Increase Your Property Value

A modern, attractive swimming pool adds significant appeal to your property.

Whether you're planning to stay in your home or sell in the future, a professionally renovated pool is an investment that improves both appearance and value.

5. Fix Problems Before They Become Expensive

Small cracks, worn surfaces, leaking fittings, and aging finishes rarely improve on their own.

Addressing these issues during winter can prevent more costly repairs later while ensuring your pool is in top condition for summer.

Don't Wait Until Spring

Winter is the perfect opportunity to transform your swimming pool without sacrificing valuable swimming time.

Whether you're considering a complete fiberglass conversion, resurfacing an existing pool, or upgrading your pool heating system, now is the ideal time to get started.

Why Are There White Marks On My Fiberglass Pool?

One of the most common questions we receive after completing a fiberglass pool renovation is:

"Why am I seeing white marks on the surface of my pool?"

The good news is that in most cases, these marks are not a defect in the fiberglass, nor do they indicate that anything is wrong with the renovation.

What Causes White Marks?

The most common cause is calcium scale build-up.

Just like a kettle, shower head, or tap can develop mineral deposits over time, swimming pools can accumulate calcium and other minerals when water chemistry is not properly balanced.

These deposits appear as:

- White patches
- Chalky marks
- Rough areas on the pool surface
- White rings around the waterline

Because fiberglass has a smooth, glossy finish, scale deposits are often more noticeable than on older marbelite pools.

How To Check If It's Scale

A simple test is to gently brush the affected area using a soft pool brush.

If the white mark becomes lighter or disappears, it is likely scale build-up rather than damage to the fiberglass.

How To Prevent Scale Build-Up

1. Maintain Proper pH Levels

Your pool's pH should ideally remain between 7.2 and 7.6.

High pH levels increase the likelihood of calcium deposits forming on the pool surface.

2. Monitor Calcium Hardness

Excessive calcium in the water can lead to scale formation.

If you live in an area with hard water, regular testing becomes even more important.

3. Brush Your Pool Weekly

A gentle weekly brushing prevents minerals from settling and hardening on the fiberglass surface.

4. Keep Your Pool Circulating

Run your filtration system regularly to prevent stagnant water and mineral concentration.

5. Test Your Water Frequently

Regular water testing helps identify imbalances before they become visible on the pool surface.

Is Fiberglass Damaged By Scale?

In most cases, no.

Scale sits on top of the fiberglass gelcoat and can usually be removed through proper cleaning and water balancing.

The fiberglass structure itself remains unaffected.

Remember

A newly renovated fiberglass pool is much like a new vehicle. It will continue looking beautiful for many years if basic maintenance and water chemistry are kept under control.

Many of the white marks we are called out to inspect turn out to be simple calcium scale that can often be removed with gentle brushing and proper water balancing.

Need Advice?

If you're unsure whether you're dealing with scale build-up or something more serious, send Swift Pool Repairs & Heating a few clear photos of the affected area and we'll gladly point you in the right direction.
