Turned up to sort this Firebird Combi today - look what I found. Clues are:

Not been run for several years
Pumped Condensate drain

Who reckons they know what caused this?

Owners of Worcester Bosch Greenstar Heatslave II oil fired combi boilers. I’ve seen a number of these failing over the past few years in the location circled. Two failures that if not caught early can lead to expensive repairs. This issue is more problematic in the outdoor boiler version as it often goes unnoticed for a longer period of time.

Periodically check for water leaking from this area - a cracked manifold or a failed mains cold water pressure relief valve can leak or spray water over internal sensors, control boards, pumps and diverter valves leading to costly repairs.

If you find a leak, call and I can sort it out for you. Early intervention is always best. Call Dave on 07724 241750 if you need this issue resolving.

Thankfully the news that there is no Oil Boiler ban on new builds until 2035 and we can carry on heating our off grid homes cost effectively in the meantime. Meanwhile I’m continuing to repair & service oil fired boilers in the County.

Here’s some information to help customers concerned about their oil fired heating and rumours propagated online about banning oil fired boilers from 2026!!

I see misleading adverts on social media all the time claiming there’s a ban coming on all oil fired boilers from 2026 onwards - that’s clear nonsense.

New build properties will not be able to fit oil fired heating systems from 2026

Existing properties will still be able to replace their current oil fired boilers and there’s no date yet proposed when this is likely to stop.

There are high level talks ahead by Oftec with the government looking at HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil or Biofuel) which is a low carbon / carbon neutral form of heating. There is already biofuel added to domestic heating oil (28sec Kerosene).

As we transition toward 2030-2050 I would imagine the government will eventually realise that we cannot electrify everything and then I’d expect a move toward higher bio / HVO content in domestic heating fuels.

The good news is that with the right adjustments, most modern oil fired heating systems will be adaptable to the new breed of fuels that might be coming.

If you own an oil fired boiler especially a condensing model don’t neglect your servicing as a small problem can grow into something far more expensive without regular maintenance.

This Grant Vortex utility boiler had a blocked secondary heat exchanger was leaking poisonous combustion products and running dangerously high flue temperatures.

Full set of replacement Turbulators and new combustion seal and now safe, clean & efficient again. This boiler was also losing 15% in terms of fuel efficiency.
