Snake season has started.
I won't have my Jack Russell off lead anymore in bushland reserves and parks.
Snakes in the last week have emerged from their winter slumber and are soaking up UV rays charging themselves, they will start moving looking for a feed. Be aware and be sensible. Snakes generally try and avoid us and keep their distance. They have no need or interest in biting you or your dog. Most of the time they go undetected, out of sight out of mind.

Snake Season 2019 has been on again off again. Temperatures have been very low compared to last year. Snakes have been waiting for a few days of consistent 20 degrees temperatures in a row to start feeding. Around Melbourne that hasn't happened.
I have been called to quite a few jobs where the snake has been basking close to it's winter retreat and the snake has been a very easy capture. A number of Tiger Snakes so far and one huge Eastern Brown Snake have been captured and relocated. The brown was attracted to rodents at a chook shed. One group of canoeist's got a fright when they tried to access their canoe's and found a medium size Tiger blocking the door way. One thing I have noticed is each snake captured has been stone cold due to cold temperatures, this will certainly change as spring will soon be in full swing.

Melbourne Snake Season 2018/2019 has been a busy one as expected. Even with the record hot and dry conditions. Snakes were turning up all over the place.
Snakes were finding it tough to get a feed and were covering great distances in search of their next meal. Generally larger snakes exploit the abundance of rodents and go searching for them. This appetite for rodents brings them closer to us. Where ever humans exist rodents are close by living off our scraps. I was regularly catching Snakes in houses, garages, schools, businesses you name it.
The most common snakes as usual were the Tiger Snake in No. 1 spot, Eastern Brown Snake No.2 and The Copperhead taking 3rd position. https://snakecatchermelbourne.com.au/melbourne-snakes-faq/snakes-of-melbourne/
This is the same outcome as each previous season. I also captured a few less common species including a Common Tree Snake, a few Pythons, a couple of Red-Bellied Black Snakes and a White-Lipped Snake. All but the White-Lipped aren't indigenous to Melbourne, so were transported down by unknown means. Please remember snakes are afraid of humans so try to avoid us at all costs.
