Keith Hopewell

Keith Hopewell artist Keith Hopewell was born in York 1972, studying BA (hons) & MA (distinction) in Fine Art & Visual Culture at Winchester School of Art.

He now lives and works in Suffolk. His practice explores the relationship between sound and non-representational painting, using unorthodox and contemporary mediums. The resultant art is exhibited internationally, formally in galleries, and in public, open spaces. As a multidisciplinary artist, Hopewell’s work simultaneously collides both sculptural and painterly elements to explore sonic impressi

ons and synesthetic perceptions. Using natural rhythms, and ritualistic systems, Hopewell’s work is about creating a pure language for the senses. The essence of Hopewell’s painting practice is located within the movement of the body & in the act of performative time. Most recent paintings are focused on non-representational forms & process, working with the simplicity of monochrome gestural compositions. These works are about reaching a point of purity, through stripping down learnt techniques & allowing chance to predict the outcome. Nowhere is this more relevant, than in his current ‘Remote-ism’ works created in the 2020 summer lockdown. Here, the notion of painting with resistance questions painting’s specificity, as spray cans are rolled freely across raw canvas, leaving tracks & traces. A democratisation of this unorthodox medium. Past gestural works also explore colour language, and Hopewell’s ideas concerning ‘extension & motion’ theories. By using simultaneous & subjective colour contrasts & assimilation of interspersed colours, the works invoke physiological effects & time delays. In these paintings, Keith explores the synesthetic relationship between visual perception & sound frequency.

What do you think? This piece was quite a work out. 9 hours approximately. Line after line after line working with spray paint freehand. As usual, my practice incorporates sound with gestural mark making. Producing the ephemeral through form.

Another work in the bag, inspired by morphic resonance and toroidal fields. It's a nice quiet corner in Ipswich to paint and reflect. This one has a bit of a Da Vinci drawing feel to it....

A new freestyle piece just finished today in Ipswich. Exploring the ephemeral, toroidal fields, space and motion. The only thing I knew for certain was the colour palette and the sketch I did was discarded. Sometimes you just have to go with spirit...

At last, I've finally painted a tribute for Bunny Bread. I've been meaning to do it for a while, and being in Birmingham for the 'Anything Shiny' launch by and last night in digbeth presented the opportunity. The piece will be moved inside the venue.

Here’s a little window into how vinyl records are made. There’s a lot of talk about a resurgence of new artists pressing vinyl, but the reality on the ground is a bit different. Most record shops today still move far more retrospective releases—used gems, reissued classics—than fresh hip hop drops. Platforms like Bandcamp have become the real home for new independent releases, carving out their own corner of the market.

The record being pressed here is the debut LP from Full Metal Rabid - Rabbit Cuts: Volume 1, complete with a few short audio snippets. Call it UK hip hop, call it global hip hop—either way, this album delivers. Beats, samples, basslines, lyrics, cadence, flow… it’s all in there.
