✨CIJ Landscapes in Wonderland✨

It was a proud moment to be told the owner of Lewis Carroll’s former house had specifically requested us to transform a garden that hadn’t been touched since the Victorian era. There was a design, but we found a wall from the 13th century running through the garden and archaeologists wouldn’t let us touch it. This meant tearing up the design and just making it up as we went along based on the customers vision. Awkward logistics, awkward weather, but we got there. Just a water feature left to install.

Because driveways don’t have to be boring.

Here are some progress pictures of our current project.

We are very lucky to have been working on a historical landmark in the heart of Guildford for the past four months . The house where Lewis Carrol, author of Alice in Wonderland, once lived and died.

It’s been a bit of a mad project so far in that we’ve had to have archaeologists present whilst excavating hundreds of tons. A medieval wall was found where we were building steps up the garden, which meant the design we were working to basically became redundant and we’ve been sort of making it up since based on the customers vision.

A logistical nightmare, but it’s been fun.

LOVED this one. This started as a like-for-like brief but the customers were wonderful to work with. They allowed me to be creative and together we figured out textures, colours and the design as we were building. It just unfolded organically. We decided on the herringbone feature patio as it will become the dining area once the table arrives, so the change in colour and pattern helps to highlight the different zone.

This job was built in the worst winter we’ve worked through. What was already a complex build was made so much harder by long periods of frost, and a clay garden that was almost determined to become a swimming pool. But we’re very proud of the outcome.

Some of the materials used were:

- Off white designclad
- Florence white porcelain and copings
- Florence dark tiles for the lawn edging.

All from London Stone

I’ve done some complex paving in my time, but this took all my patience. So many cuts and such a sharp slope to tackle. This is part of a huge front/back transformation we’ve been working on since November. Stay tuned as the finish line is in sight, (weather depending…)
