If you left it too late last summer, you'll know exactly what we're talking about.

UK summers are getting hotter. That's not up for debate any more. And every year, more businesses find themselves scrambling to get cooling sorted when the heat arrives, only to find that everyone else had the same idea at the same time.

The businesses that get it right are the ones that sort it now. Autumn and winter are genuinely the best time to plan an air conditioning installation. Lead times are shorter, installers have more availability, and you get to choose the right system for your setup rather than whatever can be fitted quickest when temperatures are climbing.

And here's something worth knowing if you haven't looked into it before, most modern air conditioning systems heat as well as cool. So what you're putting in for next summer is already working for you this winter. Two problems, one system, one investment.

We install air conditioning across Yorkshire for hotels, offices, food businesses, and everything in between. If you want a straightforward conversation about what would suit you, no hard sell, just honest advice, give us a ring on 01943 462622 or drop us a line at [email protected].

Don't wait until you're sweating it. 🌡️

As the seasons change, it's worth keeping a closer eye on your refrigeration equipment than you might think.

Most people assume refrigeration is one of those things that just runs in the background, and for the most part, it does. But the time of year has more of an effect on your kit than you'd expect.

During warmer months, your equipment is working harder. The ambient temperature around your units goes up, and that means your refrigeration system has to work harder to maintain the same temperature inside. Research suggests that a 10°C rise in ambient temperature can reduce the cooling capacity of some systems by as much as a third, and push energy consumption up at the same time. If your equipment is already carrying a fault or hasn't been serviced in a while, that's when it tends to show.

Then as we move into autumn and winter, the demands shift again. Kitchens get busier, stock levels go up, and for some businesses, hotels, food producers, breweries, the pressure on refrigeration is higher than at any other point in the year. Not the best time to discover something's not quite right.

It doesn't have to be a full breakdown to cost you money. A unit running slightly warm, a seal that's starting to go, a condenser that needs a clean, these things don't fix themselves, and they tend to get worse before they get better.

If you haven't had your equipment looked at in a while, now's a sensible time to do it, before the colder months bring heavier demands and you're relying on your refrigeration to perform.

When your refrigeration packs in, yes, you need it fixed. But you also need someone who picks up the phone. Someone who keeps you in the loop. Someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

That's not just the engineer on site. That's the whole team.

At Wharfedale, when you work with us, you're dealing with real people at every stage, whether that's the engineers out on the tools, the office handling your account, or the management keeping everything running the way it should.

We think that matters. A lot, actually.

Because it's not just about the equipment. It's about knowing that whoever you speak to, whether you're booking a service, chasing a report, or dealing with a breakdown at the worst possible time, you're going to get someone who's friendly, who knows their stuff, and who's going to help you sort it.

That's the team we've built. And we're pretty proud of them.

Got a question about your refrigeration or air conditioning? Give us a ring on 01943 462622 or drop us an email at [email protected], whoever picks up will be happy to help.

We don't take long-term customers for granted. Not one bit.

When someone who's trusted you for years takes the time to write something like this, you stop and appreciate it:

"Having used Wharfedale for a number of years now, I can honestly say that we could not wish for a better service. Everyone you deal with, accounts, engineers, servicing or management, are friendly and knowledgeable. They arrive when they say they will and get the job done every time. An excellent company I have no hesitation in recommending."

Thank you. Genuinely. That kind of loyalty means everything to us.

What stands out to us in that review isn't just the kind words, it's the specifics. Turning up when we say we will. Knowing the job inside out. Every part of the team, not just the engineers on site.

That's what we try to get right, every single time.

So thank you again to our customer for their continued support. We'll keep doing our best to deserve it. 🙏

A restaurant kitchen and a butcher's shop both need refrigeration. But what they need looks very different.

Here's why it matters:

🍽️ A restaurant might need undercounter fridges for fast access, a walk-in cold room for bulk storage, and display units that look the part front-of-house. Temperature consistency is everything, especially when you're serving food at pace.

🥩 A butcher is dealing with raw meat every single day. That means tighter temperature ranges, specialist hanging space in some cases, and equipment that can handle a heavy-duty working environment without missing a beat.

☕ A café might only need a couple of display fridges and a small back-of-house unit, but they still need it to be reliable, energy efficient, and the right fit for the space they're working with.

🛒 A food retailer could be running multiple display cases, a cold room out back, and everything in between, all needing to work together and stay compliant.

One business's solution won't work for another. It's not just about the equipment, it's about understanding how that business actually operates.

That's why we take the time to understand your setup before we recommend anything. We've been doing this for a long time, and a bit of honest advice upfront can save a lot of hassle down the line.

If you're not sure whether your current refrigeration setup is working as well as it should be, give us a ring.

Most businesses have a plan for a lot of things. Fire evacuation. IT going down. Staff absences.

But refrigeration? That one tends to get forgotten, right up until the moment it stops working.

If your fridge or cold room goes down and you don't know who to call, that's when the stress really kicks in. Stock at risk. Service disrupted. Every minute counts.

Having a plan doesn't have to be complicated. It's as simple as:

- Knowing your equipment (what you've got and when it was last serviced)
- Having a reliable engineer's number already saved in your phone
- Not having to google "emergency refrigeration repair" at 11pm on a Saturday

At Wharfedale, we're available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and when you ring us, you're talking to people who can actually help, not just take a message.

It's worth a two-minute conversation now to save a very stressful few hours later.

People sometimes ask what a typical day looks like for one of our engineers.

Honestly? There isn't really one.

You might start the morning doing a routine service on the refrigeration at a hotel. Checking temps, logging everything, making sure what should be cold is cold and everything's running as it should. Straightforward enough. Then the phone goes, and someone's ice machine at a pub has packed in on a busy Thursday. So the afternoon looks a bit different to what was planned.

That's just the nature of it.

In any given week, our lads might be in a commercial kitchen, a hospital, a food production unit, a school canteen, a brewery cellar, or a corner shop. Each one has different kit, different layouts, different pressures. The chef who needs their walk-in fridge sorting before the lunch service has a very different kind of urgency to the factory manager trying to keep a cold chain intact. You read the room. You get on with it.

What doesn't change is the job itself. Figure out what's wrong, fix it properly, leave it better than you found it.

It's not glamorous work, most of the time. A lot of it is being on your knees in a tight space behind a cold room, or trying to track down a fault that isn't obvious. But there's something satisfying about it, if you're the sort of person who's wired that way. Most of our engineers have been in the trade for years. They're not just turning up with a spanner and hoping for the best.

We're quite proud of the team we've built, if we're honest. They're good at what they do, and they give a damn about doing it right.

That counts for a lot in this trade.

Where you put your fridge isn't just a question of where it fits.

We see it more than you'd think, equipment that's been shoved into a corner, squeezed next to an oven, or tucked against a wall with barely any breathing room. It's working flat out from day one, and owners don't notice until something goes wrong.

Here's the basic idea. Refrigeration equipment gives off heat as it works. That heat needs somewhere to go. If it's trapped, bad ventilation, walls too close on all sides, next to another heat source, the unit has to work harder just to do its job. Over time, that extra effort takes its toll. You'll notice it in your energy bills before you notice it anywhere else. Then, eventually, in a breakdown.

The surrounding temperature matters too. A commercial fridge standing in a hot kitchen with no airflow around it isn't going to perform the same as one that's had a bit of thought put into its location. It sounds obvious when you say it out loud, but it gets missed more often than it should.

A few things worth keeping in mind before anything gets installed:

Is there enough clearance around the unit for air to move freely?
Is there a heat source nearby, an oven, a fryer, direct sunlight through a window?
Is the ventilation in that area actually doing its job?

None of this is complicated. It's just worth thinking about before the equipment goes in, not after.

If you're planning a new installation or you're not sure whether your current setup is working against you, give us a ring. We'll have a look and tell you straight.

Most businesses don't think about their refrigeration, until it stops working. 🧊

For restaurants, cafés, pubs, and food retailers, refrigeration isn't a background appliance. It's the backbone of the whole operation. Your stock, your prep, your service, all of it depends on your fridges and cold rooms doing their job, quietly and reliably, every single hour you're open.

And when it goes wrong? The knock-on effect is immediate. Stock at risk. Menu items pulled. Customers turned away. A busy Friday night service suddenly becomes a crisis. The cost isn't just the repair bill, it's lost sales, wasted product, and the stress of trying to hold everything together while waiting for someone to turn up and sort it.

The businesses that feel it least are the ones who treat refrigeration maintenance as a priority rather than an afterthought. Regular servicing means small issues get caught before they become big ones, and when something does go wrong, they've got someone they can ring who knows their equipment and will actually get there.

We've been looking after commercial kitchens, pubs, and food businesses across Yorkshire for nearly 20 years. If you want engineers you can rely on, whether that's a regular maintenance plan or just knowing you've got someone to call in an emergency, give us a ring.

Don't ignore a damaged fridge door seal. 🚪❄️

It's one of those things that's easy to put off, the seal's a bit worn, the door doesn't quite close flush, it'll be fine for now. But here's the thing: a poorly sealing door is one of the quickest ways to put your refrigeration equipment under serious strain.

When warm air gets in, your system has to work harder to maintain temperature. That means the compressor runs longer, energy bills go up, and components wear out faster than they should. On a cold room or commercial chiller, a damaged seal isn't just an inconvenience, it can affect product temperatures, food safety compliance, and ultimately shorten the life of the whole system.

The good news? Door seals and closers are straightforward to check and relatively inexpensive to sort, especially compared to an emergency breakdown or a compressor replacement down the line.

If your doors aren't closing properly, there's a draught around the frame, or you can see the seal is cracked or pulling away, get it looked at. It's the kind of small job that prevents a much bigger one.

We check door seals and closers on every maintenance visit as standard. If you'd like us to take a look at your equipment, give us a ring on 01943 462622.
