Why Does Every Air Conditioning Unit Need a Condensate Drain?
One of the most common questions in the HVAC field is:
Why do all air conditioning units, such as FCUs, AHUs, and DX units, require a condensate drain line?
The answer begins with understanding the concept of the Dew Point Temperature.
The air around us is not dry air; it is moist air, meaning it contains a certain amount of water v***r. The amount of moisture the air can hold depends on its temperature and relative humidity.
The dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes fully saturated with water v***r (Relative Humidity = 100%). At this point, the air can no longer hold any additional moisture, causing the water v***r to condense into liquid water.
Practical Example
Room air temperature: 26°C
Dew point temperature: 15°C
Cooling coil temperature: 11–13°C
As the warm, humid air passes over the cooling coil, its temperature gradually decreases.
When the air temperature reaches 15°C (its dew point), it becomes 100% saturated.
As the air continues to cool below the dew point, it can no longer retain all of its water v***r. The excess moisture condenses on the surface of the cooling coil, forming water droplets.
These condensate droplets collect in the drain pan and are then discharged through the condensate drain line.
