It was a pleasure helping this Daniel Island family brighten up their cozy living room. Having wired homes for over 20 years before moving into the service side, it still surprises me how often builders overlook lighting upgrades in large living spaces. While I understand the ‘builder-grade’ approach to keep initial costs low, there’s nothing like custom lighting to truly finish a home.

Before the first outlet goes in, you’re looking at:
• Electrical permits
• Load calculations
• Subpanel planning
• Proper grounding and bonding
• Code-compliant wiring
• Inspection approval

Adding a detached garage can mean running new service, trenching, upgrading panels, and making sure everything passes inspection the first time.

Electrical isn’t “just pulling wire.” It’s safety, compliance, and long-term performance.

Adding a generator can come with hidden challenges, especially in older homes. Many panels weren’t designed to handle the amp load a generator requires, and crowded or outdated breaker panels can limit what you’re actually able to power during an outage.

That said, this can also happen in newer homes depending on the size of the service, how the panel was originally set up, and what loads are already in use. Undersized breakers, improper backfeeding, or a panel that’s at capacity can lead to tripped breakers, damaged equipment, or serious safety risks.

Happy my customer trusted me to do this project as it was quite the challenge.
