Designing and building a home is one of the most personal journeys a family can undertake.

It’s about far more than plans, approvals and construction. It’s about creating a place where life will unfold for years to come.

At XO Architects, we believe that experience should feel special from the very beginning.

Each presentation model is individually 3D printed, assembled, refined and carefully packaged by hand. The model itself helps clients engage with the design in a tangible way, but it is also part of the experience. A moment to pause, explore the project together, and begin to appreciate the spaces before they are built.

We intentionally limit the number of projects we undertake each year so that every client receives the time, attention and design focus their project deserves. This allows us to fully immerse ourselves in each brief, carefully resolve every detail, and create homes that are genuinely bespoke to their owners, their lifestyle and their site.

For us, great architecture is not only about the finished building. It’s about making the entire journey thoughtful, personal and memorable.

Because when you’re creating a home that is uniquely yours, the process should feel just as considered as the outcome.

One of the most exciting stages of any project happens before construction even begins.

These conceptual visualisations allow us to communicate the architectural vision early in the process, transforming plans, sections and technical drawings into a more expressive representation of the future home.

For this Bergendal residence, the illustration explores the relationship between architecture and landscape, highlighting the stepped composition, layered volumes and carefully framed views that respond directly to the site’s natural topography.

By presenting projects in this way, clients gain a deeper understanding of the design intent, helping to create confidence, clarity and alignment before detailed documentation and construction commence.

Good architecture is not only about solving practical challenges; it is about creating a compelling vision for what a place can become.

Sometimes the smallest additions make the biggest difference.

This new study addition to a home we previously designed in Bergendal was carefully integrated to feel as though it had always been part of the original architecture — extending the language of the home while creating a quiet space to work, reflect and take in the surroundings.

Positioned to capture breathtaking views over the natural dam and koppies beyond, the space is designed around light, landscape and calm. A place where architecture and environment quietly meet.

At XO Architects, we believe additions should not simply add space — they should add meaning, experience and longevity to a home.

Designed for a sloping site in Bergendal, this home is shaped by the land rather than imposed on it.

The volumes step with the terrain, creating a series of connected spaces that open onto generous terraces and frame views into the landscape. Softer, more organic forms contrast the structure and strengthen the connection between inside and outside.

A key driver was preserving the natural character of the site — retaining mature trees, existing planting, and exposed rock formations to anchor the home in its setting.

Architecture here becomes a mediator between terrain and living, working with the slope, not against it.

Additions + Alterations, Camps Bay.

The project reworks an existing structure through a series of layered interventions — extending floor plates, introducing deep horizontal overhangs, and recalibrating the façade to strengthen orientation, views, and environmental performance.

A restrained material palette of plaster, timber, and glass articulates the composition. Vertical timber screens provide solar control and rhythm, while continuous, frameless balustrades dissolve the boundary between inside and out.

The result is not a new building, but a restructured one — where spatial hierarchy, circulation, and envelope are reconsidered to align with contemporary patterns of living along the Atlantic seaboard.

NEXO HOUSE | Designing with Confidence

Our new in-house 3D printer has become one of the most valuable tools in our design process.

By producing physical models throughout the project, we’re able to test massing, refine proportions, resolve levels and understand how a building truly sits in its context — long before construction begins. Seeing the design in three dimensions, in real scale, reveals things that drawings and renders alone can’t.

The result?
More considered decisions.
More refined architecture.
Fewer surprises on site.

For our clients, it creates real confidence. Instead of trying to interpret plans, you can hold the project in your hands and clearly understand what the end result will look and feel like. It bridges the gap between concept and reality.

For developers and sales teams, it becomes a powerful presentation and marketing tool — helping buyers immediately connect with the vision.

This is a service we now offer in-house: precision 3D printed architectural models that strengthen the design process and bring clarity to every stage of a project.

If you’d like a model built for your project, let’s talk.
