A privacy screen isn’t about turning your backyard into a fortress, it’s about stopping the neighbour’s kitchen window from looking straight onto your deck.

A glass stair handrail isn’t glass you hold — it’s glass for the view and a real rail for your hand.

Most Brisbane stairs use toughened glass as the barrier, then a stainless or aluminium rail on top or on offsets. The glass stops the fall. The rail is the grip.

How to spec it:
Frameless glass + offset stainless — maximum light
Semi-frameless + top rail — glass with a clearer budget
Glass on the open side + wall rail — best continuous support

For many houses, the handrail sits about 865 mm above the nosings on a flight with a 1 m rise (NCC). Near the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast, ask for 316 stainless. A certifier confirms, and the rules can change.

Stainless doesn’t automatically last longer. On a Queensland stair, the grade and the coating decide.

Aluminium vs stainless steel handrails is a site choice. Powder-coated aluminium won’t rust and needs less wiping. Stainless looks premium — use 316 near the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast, or it can tea-stain.

How to choose:
Aluminium — colour, outdoor default, UV and salt
316 stainless — metal finish, glass stairs, coastal if you wash it
304 stainless — mainly indoor or well inland

If you can see the neighbour’s kitchen, it isn’t full privacy slat fencing.
Full privacy means overlapping slats or almost no gaps. Open decorative slats look modern and do almost nothing for overlooking. Powder-coated aluminium copes with Queensland heat, UV and salt.

How to spec it:
Overlapping horizontal — most privacy, easier to climb
Tight vertical battens — privacy with less of a ladder
A deck screen — when you only need to block one view

A dividing fence is often 0.5–1.8 m as “sufficient” in QLD. Over 2 m in Brisbane can need building approval. Horizontal privacy slats are usually not a pool barrier — QLD pool laws still want a non-climbable fence and a self-closing gate. An inspector certifies, and the rules can change.

Both can last 15–25 years or more in Brisbane heat, UV and coastal salt if they’re specified properly. The gate usually fails first — not the panels.

How to choose:
Glass — doesn’t fade; use the right stainless hardware near the coast
Aluminium — no rust, less cleaning; powder coat and screws matter
Hybrid — glass for the view, aluminium for toughness

QLD pool laws (QDC MP 3.4) still require about 1200 mm height, a self-closing/self-latching gate and a non-climbable zone. A licensed inspector certifies, and the rules can change.
