The pool is not placed beside this house. It organizes the entire spatial experience.

A swimming pool, shallow reflecting garden and stepping-stone path create the central axis connecting the entrance, living room, kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom.

Deep roof overhangs provide shade. Continuous timber ceilings guide movement through the covered spaces, while pale natural stone and dark pebble water gardens establish a restrained material palette.

Every principal room opens toward water or a private tropical garden.

How can a two-storey tropical villa respond naturally to a sloping site?

This design study avoids placing one large building platform across the land. Instead, the villa is composed as a series of stepped horizontal volumes that follow the terrain.

The lower pavilions contain the main living spaces and open toward a central pool courtyard. Above, the bedroom volume is recessed behind deep roof overhangs and vertical timber screens, creating privacy while reducing the apparent height of the house.

The material strategy reinforces this organization:

• Dark natural stone anchors the lower level to the terrain
• Warm timber ceilings connect interiors with sheltered outdoor spaces
• Vertical screens filter sunlight across the upper bedrooms
• Green roofs visually extend the surrounding landscape
• Internal courtyards introduce daylight and planting into private spaces

Architecture, interior and landscape are developed together from the conditions of the site.

How can one material language connect an entire tropical house?

In this design study, reddish natural stone establishes the main architectural character—from the private entrance wall to the internal courtyards, living room and bedroom features.

Continuous timber ceilings extend beyond the glass line, visually connecting the interiors with shaded verandas. Large sliding panels allow the rooms to open completely, while vertical timber screens filter tropical sunlight and maintain privacy.

The material palette remains deliberately restrained:

• Reddish natural stone for visual weight and permanence
• Warm timber for ceilings, screens and joinery
• Clear glazing for spatial continuity
• Light mineral surfaces to reflect natural daylight
• Water and tropical planting to soften the architecture

Rather than treating architecture, interior and landscape as separate layers, each material is repeated to create one coherent spatial experience.

A refined tropical facade begins with climate-responsive solutions.
The floating roof, recessed shadow gap, deep overhangs, and external screens help control sunlight and tropical rain. A shaded gallery supports natural ventilation while connecting the interior with the pool courtyard and landscape.

COURTYARD HOUSE SHAPED BY LIGHT, WATER & NATURAL MATERIALS

This residence is organized around a central water courtyard, creating visual connections between the living room, kitchen, dining area and private spaces while maintaining privacy.

Deep roof overhangs reduce direct sunlight. Full-height glazing brings natural light deep into the interior and strengthens the indoor–outdoor connection. The courtyard and open layout also support natural airflow throughout the home.

Natural stone, exposed concrete, warm timber, dark metal frames and glass form a restrained, durable material palette—bringing warmth, texture and a quiet resort atmosphere.
