Before disposable plates, a forest leaf could become tableware.

Across South Asia, large leaves from the sal tree, Shorea robusta, were collected, overlapped and stitched with slender plant fibers or small slivers. The joined leaves became pattal or patravali plates, along with smaller bowls used for serving food.

The clever part was not one leaf. It was the construction. Overlapping surfaces reduced open gaps, the stitches held the arrangement together, and shaping produced a recognizable plate without pottery, metal or modern plastic.

Sal-leaf plate making also developed into a cottage livelihood for forest communities. Contemporary production sometimes heat-presses the stitched leaves, but the central transformation remains visible: leaf, seam, plate.

Which leaf-made plate or food container do you remember from a market, festival or family meal?
