“The clean lines go so far that it starts to feel cold.”

We hear some version of that in almost every first meeting. And it’s a fair worry. Clean lines, big glass, and white walls can tip into feeling more like a gallery than a home.

The fix usually isn’t less modern. It’s more wood. When there’s concrete underfoot or white on the walls, we look up and add warmth overhead. Then we carry that wood ceiling right out past the glass into the soffit, so the inside and outside feel like one warm place.

Swipe through five homes where the wood does the warming.

Planning something modern that still feels like home? Let’s talk. Link in bio.

This house hides Lake Michigan on purpose.

For the owners, the best part of this Leelanau site was never the view from the top. It was the walk down: a worn-out stair, a path through dense woods, and the lake showing up only at the final turn.

They named the project Miegakure, after the Japanese garden principle of hiding a view so it can be revealed.

So the house is designed to do the same. From the drive, a stone and wood facade keeps the lake out of sight. Step through the front door and it opens up, with a view straight through the house to an overlook past the bluff’s edge, 25 feet above the ground.

These new renderings show that idea taking shape.

Building on the lake? Ask your architect one question early: where will you first see the water?

When does a new home first feel real? Not move-in day. The foundation pour.

Last week, our clients walked the foundation pour at the San Lucia Residence in East Grand Rapids. No walls, no roof, just concrete going into the ground. And still, for the first time, they could stand in the spaces they’ve been picturing for almost a year.

They’ve bought and renovated plenty of homes over the years. This is the first one they’ve designed from the ground up, and watching them walk it was one of the best moments of the project so far.

Follow along this year as San Lucia comes to life.

Small change, big impact.

Which roofline would you choose?

Same home. Two different approaches.
Subtle. But it makes a difference

Which one fits the site? The entry?

We ask because good design starts with questions.

Why the H?

When we first looked at the Northshore site, the question wasn’t, “What should the house look like?” It was, “How should it live?”

The site called for a home that could feel expansive, while still feeling personal. A place where spaces could open to Lake Michigan, while others could remain quiet and private.
The answer was an H.
Two wings create a series of intimate moments within the larger home, connected by shared living spaces that open toward the lake. Light moves through the plan. Views are framed. Privacy is created without turning the house inward.

In the end, the shape wasn’t about making an H.

It was about answering a series of questions:
Where should the light come from?
What should you see?
What should remain private?
How should the house feel as you move through it?

The form simply followed the answers.

What do you do when a homeowner asks for floor-to-ceiling windows, incredible golf course views, and a home that feels immersed in nature?

You lean into the challenge! Hidden Lakes Residence is an extraordinary home designed for a wooded, sloping site overlooking the owner’s favorite golf course. Instead of fighting the terrain, we lifted the main living spaces above the landscape in a glass box so our clients feel like they’re floating among the trees - creating a home filled with natural light, sweeping views, and a strong connection to the outdoors while still offering the comfort and privacy every home needs.

We’re honored that Hidden Lakes Residence has been recognized with an AIA Michigan Honor Award for Residential Design.

And just as easily, San Lucia knows how to hide away.

Tucked-away spaces invite you to slow down, especially the library, placed in a quiet corner. It’s a place to sink in, turn a page, and let the rest of the home fade into the background. Just beyond, the family room offers its own kind of comfort - cozy, familiar, and perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

A reminder that the best homes don’t just bring people together, they also give you space to be alone.

Some homes are made for gathering - San Lucia makes it effortless.

The kitchen is where everything begins, but it never stays contained. Doors open wide, and the space flows naturally into the outdoor kitchen and courtyard beyond. Cooking becomes something shared, where conversations drift in and out with the breeze and every meal feels a little more connected to the moment.

It’s the kind of place where dinners turn into lingering evenings, where hosting feels easy, and where the best memories are made somewhere between inside and out.

You approach San Lucia from the street, where its quiet, grounded presence feels in step with the surrounding context, yet it reveals little of what’s inside. Instead of opening outward, the home gently pulls you through a threshold and leads you into a calm spaces surrounding an open courtyard at its center. The space feels immediate and grounding, framed by heavy brick walls that rise like steady bookends, while above, long overhangs stretch out to offer shelter and blur inside and out. As you move through the home, natural wood, metal, and brick unfold around you, creating warmth and texture, and everything seems to orbit this inner space. The space where life happens. Coffee in morning light, conversations drift easily between rooms and open air, and evenings shaped around shared meals and warm fires.
