This week we spent some time with the 1962 M.P. Moller pipe organ, Opus 9590 at Overbrook Presbyterian Church of Columbus, Ohio. The pouches and primaries of the 16' Rohrgedeckt and 8' Rohrflute were failing and needed to be restored. This organ is a three manual instrument with 28 ranks, and with the exception of the exposed pipes on the front wall, is packed tightly into pipe chambers behind the where the choir sits off to the left.

Works continues on the 1966 III/70 Casavant pipe organ both onsite and in our shop. The video is shot in the 'leather room,' which located in the basement away from the drills and saw that can create sawdust. This is latest batch of 14 skins we ordered to complete the releathering the pouch boards throughout the organ. The leather is goat (ethically sourced), chrome-tanned, and as thin as a few sheets of notebook paper. Each skin is placed on a light-box to note any thin spots or holes that may not have been caught and marked at the factory. The leather is cut to the appropriate size and the restoration process begins.

The new console made it through the front doors of Grace Church just before the rain this morning. Onsite work begins in earnest to complete this final phase of the restoration.

Onsite work began today to upgrade the wiring of what will be the fully-restored 1924 Austin pipe organ at Grace United Methodist Church of Zanesville, Ohio. The wiring is original to the instrument and each wire is wrapped in cotton to insulate it from others within the cable. Typically cotton covered wiring was coated in arsenic so that mice wouldn't steal the cotton for their nests! All the wiring similar to what you see in these photos will be removed and replaced, and new relays are installed, too.

The first photo is looking through the door into the "Universal Windchest," Austin Organs unique design allows the organ technician to climb (or walk, crawl, slither, stoop...) inside the windchest, and observe and repair the organ with the wind on!

The pipes sit outside on top of the windchest. Pictured in the third photo are the valves located on the ceiling (underside of the toe boards, to be accurate) that open to allow air into the pipes.

The new console delivery is coming next, stay tuned!

The M.P. Moller pipe organ, Opus 8272, was installed at Bridgeport (WV) United Methodist Church in 1952 as a two-manual, twenty-rank instrument. It was expanded in 1997 with six additional ranks.

Around 2015, discussions began about releathering the organ and upgrading the console and relay system. Plans later grew to include a third manual, a Choir division, and digital voices. In 2024, work began: pouches and primaries were restored, wiring was updated, stoppered pipes were restored, and the 16’ Faggotto and 8’ Trompette pipes were sent to our shop for restoration.

The most challenging task was converting the two-manual console into a three-manual console. New, stained-to-match keyboards were installed, stop jambs were expanded for digital voices and a future Choir division, thumb and toe pistons were added, a Choir expression shoe was installed, and modern features such as Next, Bass, All Swells to Swell pistons, MIDI input/output, and record/playback are included. The updated specification will be available on the Pipe Organ Database in the near future. Truly a labor of love over the last 30 months!

Cincinnati has seemingly become the place for new pipe organs, how amazing is that? The Rudloph von Beckerath organ at St. Lawrence Church has a unique origin story. Beckerath built a mechanical, tracker-action pipe organ in 1974 with 48 ranks of pipes which was installed in Texas. In recent years, organ technicians from the firm in Germany traveled to America to remove the organ. They expanded the organ to 66 ranks and relocated the Ruckpositiv division from the main case to the gallery rail, at the organist's back! Anyone may attend.

Hayden Glasgow will present an organ recital at All Saints Lutheran Church, 6770 N. High St., Worthington, Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 pm on the 33-rank Kegg pipe organ. Hayden is midway through his degree work for a Doctorate of Music in organ performance and literature at Indiana University. As a member of All Saints he was a student member of the Columbus AGO Chapter. The recital is free and open to the public.

Hayden Ives-Glasgow is a native of Columbus, Ohio, and graduated summa cm laude with his Bachelors of Music in organ performance at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music under Dr. Michael Unger, as well as his Masters of Music degree in Organ Performance at Indiana University under Dr. Janette Fishell. He continues his schooling at Indiana University under Dr. Fishell, pursuing his Doctor of Music in organ performance and literature. Within his time at Indiana University he has been an Assistant Instructor of piano and, currently, organ. Formerly, he worked as an organ intern at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana and as organ scholar at Covenant-First Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church in Louisville, Kentucky. He has performed a variety of both solo and collaborative recitals, performing a wide variety of repertoire to reflect the organ’s vast musical tradition. He has received the Roger and Claribelle Schlemmer Scholarship
Endowment for his musical accomplishments and was highlighted by the UC Foundation in their “Philanthropy Friday” series. Currently, Hayden is the organ scholar at Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis, participating and supporting the great liturgical and musical tradition of the church.
He is excited and grateful to be able to play another recital at All Saints Lutheran Church, which is not only the church he was raised in, but the church in which he discovered his love for the organ and wider church music.

CONSOLES! We have a literal shop full of organ consoles for various levels of upgrades and improvements.

The brand new console for the 1924 Austin organ belonging to Grace United Methodist Church of Zanesville, Ohio has been delivered! We will install the operating system and update the onsite wiring in order to complete the total restoration of the instrument later this year. pics 1 - 7

The console for 1952 M.P. Moller belonging to Bridgeport United Methodist Church has been brought back to our shop as well. The organ previously had an expression pedal for English Bells and Flemish Bells, both now gone, which creates the space for the addition of a Choir division. Five (original) expression shoes become four and two manuals become three! pics 8 - 10

Hiding behind the Bridgeport console in pic 8, under protective cover is actually the console for the 1967 Tellers organ belonging to St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Delaware, Ohio. This console will have all new components installed, all the way down to the key contacts. In addition to this work, all the pipes have been removed and brought to our shop to be cleaned and voiced, and two new reed ranks manufactured here in Ohio (!) are installed, namely an 8' Oboe and a 16'/8'/4' Trumpet. pics 11-16

We have the honor to continue the restoration of the 3 manual, 40 rank, 1924 Austin pipe organ belonging to Grace Church. The Great and the Antiphonal organ have already been releathered, we completed the Swell releathering in 2024 and will have Choir finished later this year in time for Christmas. A new console is also provided. One of the most unique parts of this is the total restoration is that of the sixty-one note Harp unit. Each note has a pnuematic action in the wind chest to be rebuilt, a wooden stoppered pipe that needs repacked, a (hinged!) striker pnuematic that must be relathered, striker tip must be replaced and the chime bars restrung. The stoppered pipe is used to tune the individial notes. This is an incredibly labor intensive job to restore just one 'voice' in the instrument and that fact is the main reason that we rarely come across a working Harp. It's a very special project to us in it's uniquiness and to our client who appreciates and has routinely invested in their instrument. Their care over last 100 years is clearly evident througout the church.

Since the beginning of time, P-H sends postcards to our clients approximately 2-3 weeks ahead of the scheduled service appointments. When we began the postcard was 13 cents! This isn't about the cost, though, but rather the lack of timely delivery.

This past service period we have heard from numerous clients that the cards did not arrive in time, or with very late notice. See the card below - it was mailed June 4th (for a tuning scheduled for 6/18) and it was returned to the shop after July 4th.
