đź’§ SHOULD YOU BE WATERING YOUR LAWN RIGHT NOW?

Short answer… Probably not.

Here in Northeast Florida, our lawns go through a dormant period during the winter months. With cooler temperatures and shorter days, your turf simply doesn’t require the same irrigation it does in the summer.

Here’s what’s happening:

🌤 Shorter days + cooler weather = much less evaporation
🌱 Grass slows or stops growing = lower water demand
🌾 Dormant turf sheds part of its root system = reduced ability to absorb excess water

Because of this, most lawns do not need irrigation from November through February.

Running your system through winter can actually cause:

❌ Soggy soil
❌ Fungus and root disease
❌ Thin or dying turf by spring
❌ Increased risk of freeze damage to pumps and backflow devices

🌡 When should you turn it back on?

Typically when daytime highs consistently reach the upper 70s — usually late March or early April in our area.

And even then, if we’re getting rain once or twice a week, your lawn likely doesn’t need supplemental watering.

đź’ˇ Remember:
Your irrigation system is meant to be a drought safety net, not a daily habit. Overwatering leads to shallow roots, weak turf, and ongoing disease issues.

The good news? Established shrubs and ornamentals also do just fine through winter without irrigation.
