While I was out running estimates yesterday, I happened to be next to a patio we built about 15 years ago.

This patio isn’t huge or flashy, but it was built exactly how the customer wanted it, using their choice of paver — Unilock Camelot.

We installed about a foot of base and built the knee wall into the pillar the way it should be done. Most landscapers skip this step because of the extra work involved, or simply because they don’t know any better. This extra step helps ensure the pillar doesn’t separate from the wall over time.

We also built the steps using all block, which is a much better way to build steps. When contractors use slag as backfill instead because it is easier and cheaper, it can lead to issues down the road.

We believe in doing the job right the first time.

We built this customer a Trex composite deck and Unilock patio back in 2018. Recently, we were back for what was supposed to be a basic mulch job to get the property cleaned up for an upcoming graduation party. Like most projects, once we got started, it quickly turned into a full landscaping tear-out and refresh to make the house look as good as possible for the big event.

It’s always rewarding coming back years later and helping longtime customers keep their outdoor spaces looking fresh and updated.

I see crazy stuff while out bidding jobs all the time. Usually, it’s not hard to spot the customer who chose the cheapest contractor to do the job. In this situation, the contractor actually used a piece of deck scrap to fill a gap in the railing. I can’t even imagine trying to pull something like this off on a jobsite.

We recently got to spread our landscaping magic up in the beautiful city of Hudson, Ohio. When arriving last Friday morning, the first thing we noticed was all the trees needed trimmed up since we hadn’t seen this house since early March. So after a quick trip to Lowe’s for some new tools I needed to make this project stand out, we went right to work and finished up this two day project late Saturday afternoon with this transformation.

This project reminded me of my younger years in business. Back then, we were constantly working out of town doing landscaping in booming new construction areas where homes were going up everywhere. Then the 2008 real estate crash changed all of that. Most younger landscapers today have absolutely no clue what it feels like to have your phone stop ringing and nobody wanting to hire you.

That dark period in my business almost broke me. But after struggling through those years, I realized it helped make me more efficient, more disciplined, and better at my craft. Sometimes the toughest years end up teaching you the most.

In 2024, we installed this customer’s pool fence, built a Versa-Lok retaining wall, repaired the lawn after the pool construction, added new landscaping, and installed under-cap lighting.

In 2025, we returned to add a small fire pit area and walkway, completed additional grading, and installed new lawn areas after several trees were removed.

We recently wrapped the project up by removing a few flower beds and hydroseeding the newly graded areas. Repeat customers speak for themselves, and we truly appreciate the continued trust in our company over the years.
