Found a pretty cool piece of history while working in a crawl space today. This old newspaper was stuck to the underside of the floorboards and was barely readable, so I asked AI to help decipher some of the headlines.

Based on what it could make out, the paper appears to date back to March of 1888. The house itself is believed to have originally been built in the late 1700s, so the newspaper was likely left behind during work on the house sometime later.

Pretty cool to think it’s been sitting under that floor for around 138 years, and now in 2026 the house is undergoing repairs and updates, including a full repipe. A little piece of history hiding underneath a house that’s still being worked on centuries later.

🔧 Wrapped up this Topsham remodel today!

I started this one back in late April by tearing out all of the old copper water lines and cast iron drain piping before completely repiping the house. After the rough plumbing was complete, I set the tubs and showers, installed a Rheem ProTerra heat pump water heater, and finished everything off with the kitchen and bathroom fixtures. 🚿🛁

The builder went with a modern matte black and white look throughout the house, and it turned out great! 🏠

🔧 It’s been a while since I’ve shared a project on here. I’ve been focused on taking care of customers, but this repair was too good not to share and highlights why proper diagnostics matter.

The homeowner noticed water running down a cast iron drain stack into the basement. Before opening any walls, I used a sewer camera to inspect the drainage system and pinpoint the suspected failure location. This allowed me to target the repair instead of opening the wall blindly.

As a precaution, I opened the wall slightly beyond the suspected failure to inspect the surrounding cast iron after noticing a few additional areas on the camera that I wanted to verify. Fortunately, those sections were in good condition, and the problem was isolated to a vertical crack in the existing 4 inch cast iron stack.

🛠️ I removed the damaged section, installed new Schedule 40 PVC, properly supported the new piping, and tested the repair to verify the leak had been resolved.

🏡 This home is approximately 125 years old, and the original cast iron drain system had been doing its job for generations. While cast iron is built to last, even these systems eventually reach the point where repairs become necessary.

🔧 Laundry drain upgrade completed this week at a multi-unit property in Portland.

I had previously been out to this property to repair leaking washing machine valves after newer machines were installed.

The original setup had newer washing machines discharging into an older 1-1/2” drain system with the drain connection located roughly 80” above the basement floor. Between the discharge volume of modern washers and current venting requirements, the existing system was having trouble keeping up reliably.

The drainage was reworked with properly sized 2” piping and standpipes tied back into the existing 4” vented cast iron stack, allowing the system to drain and vent properly for the fixture load.

Wrapped up another basement bathroom and kitchen install in Lewiston today 🔧

This project was designed to give the homeowner a clean, functional space to bring in a tenant and generate additional income 💰

Started as a half finished basement with open walls and turned it into a finished, ready to use space. For the shower, we used a macerating pump system to keep costs down, avoid breaking up the concrete floor, and still meet Lewiston code for basement bathrooms. Clean result that works the way it should.
