Our habitat sandbox bed in the Courtyard Garden- one of my favorite projects!

I topped the sand with 6-8" of a compost and topsoil mix last year and painted the green metal sides (Chris painted the wood parts), then the environmental students seeded it last fall and wood shop students built the birdhouses, which were quickly moved into!

Celebrating the first Earth Day native plant bed- this is the OG that was planted by students in 2025. It's getting established now and this Fall we will expand the bed, take divisions and seeds, grow natives over winter, and plant them out for Earth Day 2027 along with another native shrub (maybe an elderberry- respect your elders!).

The Courtyard Garden is officially a Certified Native School Wildlife Habitat through National Wildlife Federation !

Some of the plants in this bed are:

β€’ Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis)
β€’ Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum)
β€’ Red Eastern Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
β€’ Purple Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea)
β€’ Bee Balm (Monarda fistulosa)
β€’ Rudbeckia (Rudbeckia hirta)
β€’ Wild Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana)
β€’ Common Pokeberry (Phytolacca americana)
